We're looking for a passionate and skilled Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI/ML) Scientist to join our dynamic team to guide our climate, atmospheric, geological, and life sciences data-driven decision-making efforts. The Scientist will work with teams of geoscience and life sciences subject matter experts to develop and execute strategy for internal R&D investment across geoscience and life sciences topics, while building Noblis’ AI/ML expertise into geoscience and life sciences business funnels across the Federal Government. The Scientist will work with Noblis’ scientific researchers, and senior technical staff to develop scientific solutions, integrate innovative approaches and technology, and incorporate feedback from Customers into current and new Noblis offerings and research.

 

While candidates in the Washington, DC area are preferred, we will consider fully remote U.S. Citizen candidates. Occasional domestic travel will be required for meetings and conferences. 

 

Responsibilities:

Lead efforts to integrate AI/ML into Noblis’ geoscience and life science R&D portfolio, collaborating with subject matter experts to ensure R&D investments align to novel scientific outcomes, Noblis growth objectives, and Client research prioritiesResearch, lead, and provide overarching AI/ML scientific and technical guidance to multiple concurrent project teams developing innovative, complex, leading-edge scientific and technology solutions.Apply AI/ML approaches across business opportunities and multiple domain areas including computer vision, cyber operations, complex simulation, sensing, and multimedia (voice, text, imagery, video), among others with prior focus in geosciences, climate science, and life sciences.Drive technologies, research, and prototypes derived from Noblis’ internal research and development program into existing or new Customer accounts in collaboration with Noblis subject matter experts and Center of Excellence and/or Research Center leadsWork closely with scientists and technical staff (e.g., data scientists, data engineers, infrastructure engineers, software developers, and research scientists) from across the company to advance the state of the art, while mentoring staff in the field of AI/MLServe as a liaison between Noblis’ internal Resilience & Sustainability and AI/ML teams and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to build consensus and drive success through effective communication and partner engagement.Foster a learning environment by promoting knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement across horizontal and vertical teams while leading the development and execution of initiatives to integrate AI/ML technologies into geosciences, climate, and life science domainsCollaborate with industry experts, and foster impactful academic partnerships to scale our research, recruit expertise and drive novel scientific outcomesIdentify, acquire, and process large datasets and conduct climate, atmospheric, geological, and life sciences data modeling and analysisImplement AI/ML algorithms to detect and classify patterns, anomalies, or objects in complex datasetsUtilize deep-learning predictive models in the geoscience/climate scopeCreate advanced deep-learning models that can generate new data or predict future outcomes based on existing data, enhancing decision-making processes.Combine machine learning techniques with physics-based models and geographic data to create comprehensive models that provide a multi-faceted understanding of phenomena.Apply unsupervised learning algorithms to geophysical data to identify hidden patterns or natural groupings without labeled input data, useful for exploratory data analysis.Utilize Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) practices to streamline the deployment, monitoring, and management of ML models in production environments, ensuring reliability and scalability.Leverage various computing resources such as GPU clusters (on-prem and edge) and cloud-based compute servers.Conduct data lifecycle analysis to include requirements, activities and design; Define new data collection and analysis processes. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field and 8+ years of relevant work experience (OR Master's + 6 years OR PhD + 4 years).US. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Secret clearancePossesses a geoscience, life science, and/or climate scientific background or knowledge with the ability to understand geoscience/climate materials/applications/vernacularExtensive experience in several of the following areas: Deep learning algorithms / large language models (LLMs), model algorithm selection and development, natural language processing, multimedia processing and recognition, and/or computer visionDemonstrated expertise in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Python, R, and/or SQL) and common AI development platforms and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch, Hugging Face)Demonstrated expertise in managing and contributing to multiple concurrent projects and ability to excel in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Candidate must be able to effectively manage priorities across various initiatives and projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals.Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of ML applications and methods to include deep learning (CNNs/RNNs), generative adversarial networks (GANS), model test and evaluation, workflow automation, and training data set preparationExperience with data visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or similar Desired Qualifications Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detailStrong written and oral communication, and collaboration skillsAbility to work both independently and as part of a team on multiple tasks using Agile methodologyCollaborative and proactive attitudeStrong knowledge of statistical techniques and data mining algorithmsExperience with time-series, climate, and/or meteorological forecast modelingExperience performing extract, transform, load (ETL) development for data pipelinesKnowledge of big data technologies like Spark or DatabricksExperience with Large Language Models, and vector and graph databasesExperience with geographic dataset formats (e.g., GRIB, NetCDF, SHP)Experience with physics-based and climate modelsFamiliarity with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCPExperience working with federal organizations (ex., DOE, DOD, GSA), national labs, or other related programsExperience in technology research and development, testing and validation, and/or technology transition Overview

Compensation at Noblis is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the combination of education, certifications, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, internal and external equity, location, clearance level, as well as contract-specific affordability, organizational requirements and applicable employment laws. The projected compensation range for this position is based on full time status. For part time or on-call staff, compensation is proportionately adjusted based on hours worked. While monetary compensation is important, it's just one component of Noblis’ total compensation package.
