Successful candidates will contribute to the following research centers in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: The Center for Nanotechnology and/or the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems ( CAMICS ). The college hosts an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in materials science and engineering, and a Ph.D. program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications. Department Background: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UTRGV has an enrollment of almost 1200 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. The Department offers an ABET - accredited Bachelor of Science, Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering as well as a PhD degree in Material Science & Engineering. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university (at least conferred before the start date of September 1, 2025). Candidates at the Assistant/Associate Professor level will be considered based on demonstrated potential to enhance the teaching and research capabilities of the Ph.D. Program of Material Science and Engineering and potential to contribute to the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems ( CAMICS ) and/or the Center for Nanotechnology. Assistant Professor applicants must have demonstrated evidence of leadership, skill in interdisciplinary research and collaboration along with the potential to develop (or already developed) an outstanding research program and high-profile publications as well as a successful record of extramural funding. Additional qualifications Associate Professor rank: a) must currently hold the rank of Associate Professor or be eligible for promotion to Associate Professor at their current institution, b) evidence of research and scholarly accomplishments in materials science/advanced manufacturing or a closely related field, and c) demonstrated success in securing funding, mentoring graduate students, and engaging in service. Discipline Specific Required Qualifications Applicants must also have a demonstrated ability (or a well-designed plan) to develop and maintain a funded research program and to lead multidisciplinary collaborative projects. The successful candidate will demonstrate having (or potential to) achieved excellence and balance in teaching, research and service, collaboration with faculty across disciplines and the ability to involve undergraduate students as well as graduate students in research activities. Preferred Qualifications The highest consideration will be given to applicants who have expertise in the Materials and Advanced Manufacturing areas. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
