Job Summary
The Department of Horticulture invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor tenured position.
Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate

The faculty member will develop and implement an internationally recognized undergraduate teaching and extension program in turf management. The incumbent will teach or contribute to 4 courses offered annually in general turf and golf course management, plant nutrition and physiology, and career development and explorations, which are critical components of the core undergraduate curriculum within the Horticulture degree and Turfgrass discipline. Through teaching and mentorship, the faculty member will prepare students for rewarding careers in turf management. This position will also produce extension programs based on applied research that address important horticultural and environmental issues related to environmental and economic sustainability. The incumbent is expected to work closely with professional colleagues, industry, leaders, and practitioners, both in Oregon and neighboring states in the western United States, as well as associated faculty within the departments of ecological landscape theme, to help improve the sustainability of landscape related systems.

This position will be a tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Key Responsibilities
35% Teaching:
+ Develop and deliver undergraduate turf management curricula based on active learning and innovative teaching strategies that promote student engagement with the turf grass and landscape industry, related agencies, organizations, and associations.
+ Teach four on campus and ECampus undergraduate courses, annually. Content will include individual courses in basic turf management, plant nutrition and physiology, and career development.
+ Work collaboratively with the departments curriculum committee to develop complementary and compelling curricula in horticulture and the various disciplines.
+ Co-teach the internship program and provide service-learning opportunities for students enrolled in the turf option.
+ Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, coordinate internship activities related to the turfgrass industry, and introduce students to industry related issues, associations, organizations, and representatives.
55% Extension, Research, Scholarship, and Outreach
The outreach program is expected to lead to scholarly outcomes including, but not limited to:
+ Discovery, creativity, integration, research, and applications communicated and validated through regional, statewide, national, or international peer-reviewed or peer-refereed publications, as appropriate.
+ Communication and validation of scholarship through presentations at professional meetings.
+ Development and communication of innovative educational materials and effective teaching methods that meet clientele needs, with materials, methods, and outcomes.
+ Design, develop and evaluate an extension and applied research program supported by extramural funding, and in collaboration with stakeholders, that emphasizes a wide array of integrative ecological management practices for turf systems, and that supports the teaching and county Extension faculty programs, professional in the industry, and the public.
+ Work collaboratively with horticulture and other OSU faculty members, and others in the region who are involved in landscape design and management, urban and community horticulture, and ecological ecology of management landscapes to further enhance departmental and regional undergraduate and Extension programs.
+ Supervise employees and student workers, including planning and assigning work, approving work, responding to grievances, hiring/firing or effectively recommending such actions, disciplining on signing and administering performance appraisals
+ Fulfill reporting requirements for the department, college and Extension Service.
+ Integrate, apply and/or discover new knowledge or technologies concerning turf management, ecology, or other aspects of assigned duties
10% service:
+ Participate actively in the department’s undergraduate curriculum committee.
+ Provide leadership on assessing learning with the turf curriculum, and across the curricula with the department.
+ Serve as advisor for the turf club.
+ Participate in departmental faculty meetings, committees, working groups, and other appropriate activities.
+ Serve on college, university, extension and public committees and advisory boards as requested and appropriate.
+ Independent travel will be required to perform some of the position duties.
What You Will Need
Minimum Qualifications for all ranks (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor):
+ PhD degree in Horticulture or related field.
+ Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students’ commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
+ Extension and/or applied research experience in turf grass management.
+ Experience or evidence of demonstrated high potential for teaching undergraduate courses and contributing to the graduate program.
+ Experience or high potential for quality and innovative teaching and use of technology.
+ Demonstrated intellectual curiosity, creativity and leadership skills.
+ Evidence of high potential to obtain extramural funding to support extension and teaching programs and turf management.
+ Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications, and strong scientific writing and technical presentation skills.
+ Demonstrated capacity for undergrad university level scholarship.
+ Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary team and departmental activities.
+ Possession of or ability to obtain pesticide applicators license within 30 days of hire and maintain while in the position.
+ Ability to pass a respirator fitness test within 30 days of hire date and maintain while in the position.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

+ Strong record for sustained extramural funding and publication

Preferred qualifications for all ranks (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor):
+ Experience in classroom teaching and mentoring of undergraduates.
+ Strong indication of willingness to explore and implement innovative teaching methodologies including those based on active learning approaches.
+ Ability to integrate contemporary scientific research and the science of ecology into the teaching and extension programs and turf management.
+ Evidence of the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, as a member of interdisciplinary teams and with nursery professionals.
+ Record of commitment to work with underrepresented/underserved students or other audiences’ life experience, education, or training that broadens capacity to equalize student success or impact underserved audiences.
