Neuroscientist sought for tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate or full Professor level in the Biological and Innovative Research Core at the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s & Neurodegenerative Diseases (Biggs Institute)

at the UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA). Both MD/PhD and PhD (physician and scientist) neuroscientists are encouraged to apply.The Biggs Institute is a new flagship, free-standing institute within UTHSA with the mission of establishing  an interdisciplinary, integrated program to provide comprehensive clinical care and undertake innovative and important research into the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, including vascular contributions to dementia, Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementia, chronic traumatic encephalopathy and frontotemporal dementia. It has strong institutional and community support and will benefit from existing resources within UTHSA such as the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, the Center for Biomedical Neuroscience, the Cancer Center, and the Research Imaging Institute along with the San Antonio campus of the UT Health Houston School of Public Health. In addition, there are opportunities for immersive, collaborative research within the Framingham Heart Study, the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology, the Cross-Cohorts Collaboration Consortium, the International Genomics of Alzheimer’s Project, the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project, the International Stroke Genetics Consortium and other consortia in which the founding director of the Biggs Institute, Dr. Sudha Seshadri, has a leadership role.The Biggs Institute is comprised of 5 closely integrated cores: a Clinical Care and Clinical Research Core, a  Population Neuroscience Core, a Biological and Innovative Research Core, an Education, Ethics and Training Core and a Public Health, Policy and Community Engagement Core. We are looking for visionary, dynamic faculty who will enjoy leading and collaborating across disciplines, schools, national and international networks. Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with education, experience, and publication and research funding track record. We are seeking a basic science or translational neuroscientist to supplement a diverse group of scientists working in aging and Alzheimer’s disease at the Barshop institute. Selected candidates will be expected to establish a robust research program broadly within the area of neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular contributions to dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, etc. The goals are to identify novel biology underlying dementia that could serve to develop and validate new preventive and therapeutic interventions and novel biomarkers. Strong communication skills that permit collaboration and sharing of ideas with the public are preferred. Faculty with expertise in genomics, amyloid and tau biology, secretases, huntingtin, synuclein, TDP-43 and other proteinopathies; scientists working on Drosophila, C. elegans, mouse and primate models of neurodegeneration and/or high throughput drug screening or discovery strategies including use of iPSCs, persons working on vascular contributions to neurodegeneration, and on glial and macrophage mediated immunity, mitochondrial mechanisms, the role of sleep and lymphatic flow, etc.The primary appointment will be at the Biggs Institute with an academic appointment within a suitable basic science or clinical department where additional teaching and administrative leadership opportunities may be negotiated as desired.The selected candidate will report directly to Dr. Seshadri and to the Chair of their Academic Department. Additional cross-appointments may be feasible in relevant academic departments, the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging, or the Audie Murphy Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
