Assistant Chief Engineer is a senior leadership role within the facility management team, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the operations, maintenance, and engineering activities of a large-scale commercial property or portfolio. This position requires advanced technical expertise across multiple engineering disciplines, strong leadership skills, and the ability to optimize building performance while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The Assistant Chief Engineer works closely with the Chief Engineer to develop and implement strategic plans for facility operations, energy management, and capital improvements.
Job Scope:
Leadership and Team Management:
Assist in supervising and mentoring a team of Operating Engineers and techniciansCoordinate work assignments, schedules, and performance evaluationsFoster a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and technical excellenceTechnical Oversight:
Provide advanced technical expertise in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systemsOversee complex maintenance and repair projectsDevelop and implement preventive maintenance programsTroubleshoot and resolve critical system failuresOperations Management:
Assist in developing and managing the annual operating budget for engineering and maintenanceOptimize building systems for energy efficiency and performanceEnsure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and safety standardsManage vendor relationships and oversee contractor performanceStrategic Planning:
Collaborate with the Chief Engineer on long-term facility plans and capital improvement projectsIdentify opportunities for technology upgrades and process improvementsParticipate in sustainability initiatives and energy conservation effortsClient Relations:
Act as a key point of contact for high-priority client requests and concernsProvide technical guidance and recommendations to property management teamsPrepare and present reports on building performance and engineering activitiesEmergency Response:
Lead the engineering team's response to critical situations and emergenciesDevelop and maintain emergency preparedness plansConduct regular drills and training exercisesContinuous Improvement:
Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practicesImplement new systems and procedures to enhance operational efficiencySupport the professional development of the engineering teamQualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience7+ years of experience in commercial building operations and maintenance, with at least 3 years in a leadership roleAdvanced knowledge of building automation systems, energy management, and sustainability practicesStrong understanding of building codes, OSHA regulations, and industry standardsProficiency in computerized maintenance management systems and Microsoft Office suiteExcellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skillsRelevant professional certifications (e.g., Certified Facility Manager, Professional Engineer) are highly desirableThis senior role offers opportunities for career advancement within JLL's dynamic and growing facility management division, competitive compensation, and a comprehensive benefits package tailored to support personal and professional well-being.
