Assistant Cook - Cyert Center

The Cyert Center at Carnegie Mellon University is a full-day early care and education program serving the children of our faculty, staff and students. Founded in 1971, we have grown from a program of 13 children to our current enrollment of 290 children across two centers.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Cyert Center is searching for an Assistant Cook to join their team at the Morewood location.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. The Assistant Cook plays a crucial leadership role when the Head Cook/Kitchen Manager is unavailable, overseeing the implementation of their plans and ensuring efficient kitchen operations.

Key responsibilities include monitoring and reducing food waste, managing food allergies and cross-contamination, and assessing daily meal and dietary needs. The Assistant Cook collaborates on food preparation, ensuring nutritional standards, and delivers meals to classrooms. They also perform regular cleaning and maintenance, manage kitchen deliveries, and maintain organization and cleanliness above minimum standards. Compliance with safety regulations, including completing required training like ServSafe, is essential. The Assistant Cook fosters teamwork and communication, providing high-quality customer service and supporting team members. Additionally, they assist with dishwashing and other duties as needed.

Core responsibilities include:

Food PreparationWorks with Head Cook/Kitchen Manager to prep, cook. set up, serve nutritious meals and snacksWorks with Head Cook/Kitchen Manager and Assistant Cook to prepare enough food and in appropriate portions for all children, educators, staff, and visiting parentsEnsures ingredient and nutritional information is readily availableDelivers food to classrooms/tablesCompliance & SafetyCompletes checklist to insure all equipment, food, and supplies being sent are correct food temperature when leaving Morewood kitchen to insure proper temperatures have been maintained and adjusting if needed to health regulationsCompletes required trainings, including ServSafe Team Building & CommunicationMaintains an efficient operation in Morewood’s kitchen with the Kitchen Assistant and Head Cook/Kitchen Manager, acting on behalf of Head Cook/Kitchen Manager when they are unavailable Provides high quality customer service to the children, educators and parentsRespectfully listen to and consider input from team members, valuing diverse perspectives to improve overall performanceTake initiative to help teammates without being asked, promoting a culture of mutual support and camaraderieLeadershipActs as lead kitchen staff at Morewood location when Head Cook/Kitchen Manager is unavailable, overseeing implementation of Head Cook/Kitchen Manager’s planAssists in the monitoring, reduction, and management of food wasteDetermines onsite food allergy needs, promotes food allergy awareness, and prevention of cross contamination while practicing safe food practicesAssesses daily meal and dietary needs for children and staff onsiteTrains and provides job shadowing for other kitchen staff as part of business continuity planCleaning & StoragePerforms daily weekly and monthly deep cleaning of service area and transportation equipment Maintain dairy cooler and rotation following fifo (first in first out)Maintain kitchen deliveries at the Penn Avenue locationKeeps kitchen highly clean and organized above minimum standards Loads and unload equipment on and off vehicleDishwashing and Cookware/Smallware Management Assists with dishwashing duties when necessaryOther duties as assigned

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Full range of body motion neededMust be able to lift and carry up to 50 poundsMust pass a pre-employment physical exam (including TB test) for clearance to meet the physical requirements listed above

Qualifications:

High School or GED required, Vocational or Technical School preferred1-3 years experience in food preparation, child care or school food preparationServSafe Certification

Additional Information:

This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week), exempt position
