Assistant Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs - School of Data Science
The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia (UVA) is assembling a diverse and world-class faculty with broad expertise in data science to foster and advance our research agenda and educational programs. We are seeking an experienced and strategic-minded educator/researcher to join our leadership team as the **Assistant Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs** . The Assistant Dean will hold a rank of Associate or Full professor, with tenure, in the School of Data Science and hold a 3-year renewable administrative appointment for these duties. As faculty in the school of data science, the Assistant Dean will also have (reduced) expectations for teaching, mentoring students, and engaging in research. The Assistant Dean will report to the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and oversee critical aspects of the faculty life cycle (e.g., recruitment, promotion, professional development) and/or academic affairs (e.g., curricula oversight of graduate and undergraduate programs, strategic planning, oversight of day-to-day operations). The AD will have the unique opportunity to shape the culture and direction of both a new discipline and a new school through their leadership and mentorship. Potential Responsibilities: + Provide leadership and oversight for academic programs within the School of Data Science, ensuring alignment with industry trends and academic standards. + Administer the promotion and tenure process, refining evaluation protocols, and enforcing policies in accordance with university guidelines. + Coordinate academic advising and work with student support services to enhance the student experience and promote student success. + Serve as a resource and advocate for faculty, offering support in conflict resolution, and providing resources and opportunities for professional development. + Manage academic appointments, promotions, leaves, sabbaticals, and retirement transitions for faculty members. + Manage faculty recruitment processes, including drafting job advertisements, organizing search committees, and ensuring compliance with affirmative action procedures. + A PhD in Data Science or a related field (e.g., STEM, social science, or humanities degree with a data science focus) + A demonstrated commitment to, and record of, teaching excellence + A record of collaborative research with extramural funding and a significant record of scholarly research + Ability to effectively manage direct reports and lead in a highly team-oriented and interdisciplinary environment + Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to serve as a trusted advisor and mentor to faculty members + Experience with academic administration or mentoring faculty is highly desirable + Submit a detailed cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references. + Candidates should detail their research interests, instructional experience, and other scholarly interests their cover letter. + Please describe how your past experience aligns with the UVA’s mission statement ( https://provost.virginia.edu/faculty-handbook/mission-statement-university-virginia ). + An optional research and/or teaching statement may be included.
