Summary
The Assistant Director, Body Donation Program is primarily responsible for performing duties similar to those of an embalmer. In addition, this person will maintain building facilities, supplies, and equipment that relate to the Body Donation Program. This position reports to the Director of Body Donation Program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Donor Management
Primary responsibility for on-call/first call upon the event of a death and arranging for transport company to pick up decedent. Reviews donor medical history with regard to donor acceptability per exclusion criteria. Collect blood samples for testing when warranted. If a donor is unacceptable, make a judgment call based off exclusion criteria to decline and reports decline to Director. Collects all donor information needed for submittal of death certificates to the State of Arizona in accordance with guidelines of the Arizona Board of Funeral Directors & Embalmers Obtain tracking numbers from database or Director and applies them to donors as per protocol, including proper labeling. Prepares, embalms, stores and maintains donors. Shares responsibility with Director for supervising the transfer of donors to MWU gross laboratories (AZ first, then DG) or other approved educational institutions. Shares supervision with the Director of the return and storage of MWU donors to the BDP and their subsequent transfer to an MWU-approved cremation facility.Body Donation Program (BDP) Public Outreach and Donor Relations
Assists the Director for informing and educating community members and outreach sources (hospice nurses, senior centers, chaplains, social workers, etc.) about program objectives, including the donation process, acceptance criteria, educational uses, etc. Assists the Director with donor and client family concerns or issues to resolve problems and answer sensitive questions about the donor process.Professional Program Outreach
Represents the MWU BDP at local expos and local, state, and national meetings and conferences such as: American Association of Clinical Anatomists, AZ Funeral Directors Association etc. with Director.General Laboratory Management
Assembles and periodically reviews laboratory standard operating protocols. Updates the aforementioned to meet any changes in OSHA standards, Risk Management, and/or MWU policies as needed. Conducts regular inspections of lab safety equipment and maintain records Conducts regular formaldehyde testing of lab & personnel per OSHA and maintain records. Keeps regular inventory of all lab supplies and orders supplies as needed. Maintains OSHA certifications needed for: transport, working with blood borne pathogens, etc. (Ensure that all other staff is certified as required) Responsible for keeping preparation room clean and organized, including but not limited to keeping tables and floors clean, washing tools immediately after use, changing out dirty tubing, disposal of waste formaldehyde in hazardous waste drums.Record Keeping Responsibilities
Shares responsibility with Director for donor applicant file entry into the donor database. Shares responsibility with Director for answering phones, meeting with potential applicants, fielding applicant questions, mailing out requested informational packets, and entering interested party information into the database.Additional responsibilities:
Maintains professional credentials required and participate in continuing education as needed to ensure the program policies and practices are current and in accordance with local, state, and national policies and procedures. Works with the Director to inspect educational institutions that wish to use BDP donors. Other duties as assigned.Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience
Must have graduated from an accredited mortuary science program with a minimum of an Associate’s degree. Must have a current Arizona Embalmer’s License. An Arizona Funeral Director’s license is a plus. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an embalmer is required. Experience embalming for educational purposes preferred. Must have excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills, ability to think strategically and must be highly detailed and organized.
Computer Skills
Computer proficiency in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point). Training will be provided, however a strong understanding of computers is required. Part of the position requires learning some of the unique software that both the AZ and IL campuses have in place.
Language Skills
High skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. The ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures manuals. The ability to effectively present information to top management and boards of directors.
Reasoning Ability
High skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Mathematical Ability
Intermediate skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions and proportions, percentages, area, circumference and area and to interpret graphs.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move up to 70 pounds and occasionally push up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to work with animals.
