Department Summary:

Michigan Housing is an actively engaged unit within Student Life Auxiliary Services within the Division of Student Life. Michigan Housing serves approximately 11,500 students; 9,100 undergraduate and 2,300 graduate and professional students and their families. Although first-year students are not required to live on campus; historically 96-98% of all new first-year students choose to live on.  Currently, the M Housing portfolio consists of 19 residential facilities including traditional residence halls, apartments, and other living options located in communities on north and central campuses in Ann Arbor. In Fall 2026, 5 new residence halls housing 2,300 undergraduate students and a new 822-seat dining facility will open to continue M Housing's tradition of providing affordable housing options and services for U-M students. In addition to supporting the academic mission of the University, Michigan Housing creates diverse learning-centered residential communities that enhance the residential experience and serve as a guide for their work to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). Michigan Housing's Operations department consists of 22 full-time staff members and over 200 student staff members managing housing operations responsibilities, including housing occupancy, housing applications and contracts, semesterly transition logistics, residential community center management, and housing parking permit management.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Administrative Operations, the Assistant Director, Community Operations is a supervisory role within Michigan Housing's Operations department, overseeing community center operations for a designated area of University of Michigan's housing portfolio. In partnership with M Housing operations colleagues, the Assistant Director will lead department desk operations policies and processes and manage important Operations administrative processes in service of full-time staff, student staff, and students.  Responsibilities*

Supervision (45%)

Supervise up to 5-6 full-time staff. Responsibilities include direct supervision, selection, coaching, performance management, and professional development of staff. Indirectly supervise student staff responsible for staffing residence hall desksConduct regular one-on-one meetings with supervisees to support coaching, professional development, and ongoing community center managementProvide leadership of designated residential desk operations in lieu of professional staff supervisees

Community Operations Leadership (25%)

Develop and execute policies on the residential community operations, including residence hall front desks, mail and package services, staffing, and resident supportLead the development of operational processes for residential community operationsCollaborate with colleagues in Michigan Housing, Student Life, Division of Public Safety & Security, and building partners to foster a student-centered residential environmentCo-lead Community Center full-time staff team, providing ongoing professional development to enhance capabilities and coordination among full-time staffManage appropriate community operations budgets for residential portfolio

Operations Department Leadership (20%)

Provide leadership over one of two core M Housing Operations department processes: Student staff selection and hiring, or Student staff onboarding and developmentWithin core process leadership area, guide a standing working group of full-time staff in execution of processes, projects, and tasks.Manage corresponding operations budgets

Administration (10%)

Participate in regular operations-based meetings, including leadership teams and all full-time staffMeet with supervisor to support professional development, and operations managementParticipate in ongoing operational and professional development spaces for Michigan Housing and Student Life staffProvide responses and service to full-time staff, campus partners, students, and familiesMaintain documentation and data on designated community operations and functional area leadershipRequired Qualifications*Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.Minimum of two (2) years of full-time, progressive professional experience in a college or university housing and residential life setting or similarly applicable experienceMinimum of one (1) year experience in supervisionWork Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
 Modes of Work

Additional Information

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

You will be responsible for operational and student staff wage budgets for designated housing portfolio, averaging $500,000, and functional area budgets ranging between $500 and $10,000.

Working Conditions:

This position requires on-site work on multiple University of Michigan - Ann Arbor campuses.Some nights and weekends may be required.

Physical Requirements:

You may need to transport packages of up to fifty pounds to and from different areas in the community, including shelving units, package storage locations, and mailrooms. You may travel around campus to engage with direct reports, campus partners and students.

Direct Reports:

The Assistant Director, Community Operations directly supervises up to 6 full-time Community Center Managers.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.  

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
