The Assistant Director is a renewable, term role that administers and helps lead the MA in Democracy Governance and the MA in American Government programs, two distinct MA programs in the Department of Government. The MA in Democracy & Governance is a traditional two-year MA program while the MA in American Government is an accelerated one-year program. This position manages all program administrative areas, manages certain external stakeholder networks, and, with the directors, leads the programs. The Assistant Director primarily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conceive and carry out a marketing strategy for the programs and the recruitment of students.
Stay active in student advising, assisting students in registration issues and tracking any student issues with partnering units within the College and the Graduate School.
Act as a liaison with the Graduate School on ensuring students’ progress toward their degrees.
Participate in setting the program budgets, monitoring program spending and overseeing all student related budgets (non-service stipends, research assistantships, scholarship budgets, etc.).
Manage alumni relations, overseeing alumni events and serving as the primary program point of contact for the Alumni Advisory Board.
Facilitate major events such as alumni panels, professional development workshops, guest speakers, the graduation celebration, open house, and orientation for the program, as well as ad hoc special events.
Help to supervise student workers hired within the programs.
Work Interactions
The Department of Government is one of the largest academic departments within Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences, housing three MA programs and a highly ranked PhD program. The DG and AG programs are led and managed by the Directors of each, and supported by the designated Assistant Director and several Graduate Program Student Assistants, as well as dedicated departmental service taken up by members of the tenure-track faculty of the Department, and practitioners who sit on an advisory body. Reporting to the Director of each MA program and the Department’s Administrative Officer, the Assistant Director helps to lead these MA programs and is responsible for serving its graduate students to ensure a positive student experience while pursuing their degree. This position also contributes to the success of these MA programs in recruiting and retaining top students in the field, and the overall growth of these academic programs.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
2 years of experience working in a fast-paced office
Previous work with graduate students and/or managing a graduate program
Proficiency in MS Suite applications, organization social media presence and content-based web site management Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Superior multi-tasking and time management skills
Ability to work independently and within a team
Must be able to navigate sensitive matters with utmost confidentiality, good judgement and poise
Ability to provide support for afterhours program events scheduled in the evenings or on the weekends
Preferred Qualifications
MA degree in a related field
5 years’ work experience with graduate students and/or managing a graduate program
Budget management experience
Marketing and recruiting experience

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$44,022.00 - $73,406.80Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
