Job Summary
Primary responsibilities for this position are the management of claims under the University and its affiliates’ insurance policies and to assist the Office of Risk Management in the day to day operations of the department.
Essential Functions
Process and manage claims related to thirty-plus insurance policies under the Property and Casualty Program, with heavy emphasis on workers’ compensation, property, auto, general liability and educator’s legal liability claims, including:Workers’ Compensation
Advise affected department/individual of the requirements under the Workers’ Compensation policy, assist with questions, and provide the appropriate forms to the injured employee. Investigate and obtain relevant information regarding the claim including coordinating with Environmental Safety and Health, the injured employee’s supervisor, physicians, Human Resources, and other departments as appropriate. Submit claims to the insurance company and manage them throughout the lifecycle, including liaising with the insurance adjustor and claim’s counsel if claim is in litigation. Provide training to departments on campus to advise and ensure that supervisors are aware of policies related to injured employees, as well as to address current trends occurring in their areas. Work with supervisors, physicians, insurance companies and other appropriate departments on campus to assist with return-to-work opportunities. Develop and maintain reports which show critical loss information to determine trends and ways to proactively address work related injuries. Attend claims review meetings with the broker and insurance company.Property
Investigate claims of damaged University property including site visits and coordinate with Facilities Management, Safety and Health and the affected department. Work with property insurance carrier to manage and adjust the claim and obtain reimbursement for claims over the deductible. Advise the departments on policies related to deductibles and their responsibilities after a loss and requirements for obtaining reimbursement for damaged items. Develop and maintain detailed reports of all transactions related to each property loss. Review any contracts with third parties/vendors or leases in place to determine if recovery (subrogation) opportunities are available for damages.General Liability, Auto Liability, Educators Legal Liability (ELL) and other claims:
Report claims to the appropriate insurance carrier or TPA. Develop claims handling instructions with TPA and update at least annually at the renewal of policies or as needed. Investigate and obtain information about the claim to provide to the assigned insurance adjustor or TPA including obtaining relevant contractual agreements if applicable for tender opportunities. Coordinate with in-house and external counsel and TPA to ensure that carriers are kept updated on the status of claims. Manage general liability and auto liability claims in litigation and work with outside legal counsel including but not limited to assisting with discovery responses such as review of interrogatories or working with key departments to obtain and comply with production of document requests and coordinating legal counsel with appropriate University witnesses or corporate designees. Work with Associate Vice President for Risk Management, insurance brokers and insurers on the resolution of any potential coverage issues. Manage the various aspects of the University’s property insurance program for the annual insurance renewal including ensuring all University-leased and -owned locations are included on the property schedule, as well as insured subsidiary locations. Lead efforts to work with key departments to calculate the annual business interruption income. Work with key Facilities Management personnel to update property values annually to reflect significant renovations and/or update based on industry indices; coordinate and lead responses with Facilities Management and other departments related to property loss control recommendations by carrier. Prepare loss reports for claims within the University’s deductible and obtain loss reports from insurance carriers and TPA for all other claims. Review and analyze loss reports to determine trends and propose recommendations when necessary to reduce losses. Prepare customized loss analysis reports as requested. Provide back up support to the department in reviewing certain contracts for insurance provisions for services provided to and by the University to determine if coverage is favorable in protecting the University. Advise departments of exposures when requirements cannot be met by either the vendor or University and recommend changes when necessary. Review certificates of insurance from consultants/vendors to determine if they meet the contract terms. Advise departments and/or vendors of changes that may be required. Manage and maintain Property/Casualty files for the department and other administrative duties as assigned. Participate in special projects or strategic projects and perform other duties as assignedRequired Qualifications
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.) Minimum of 5 years of claims or risk management experience. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to be detail-oriented and analyze information. Ability to prioritize competing demands and function in an academic environment with a high volume of work. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Experience with Microsoft Office software programs. Ability to present information to various levels of the organization.Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of worker’s compensation claims management.Location

This position is classified as Exempt, grade X. Compensation for this grade ranges from $62,630 - $93,950 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
