About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
This position evaluates and analyzes financial information submitted by applicants to determine eligibility for financial assistance and determines the type and amount of aid to be awarded in accordance with established federal, state and University rules and regulations so students/families can fund their educational costs. This position provides student service and counseling related to financial services to a specific caseload for Veteran and Athletic students. Incumbent serves as the lead in managing VA benefits and the Yellow Ribbon program and all Athletic aid. This position is a recognized authority (Go to Person) for complex and/or difficult financial aid matters on which the Division of Enrollment Services and other campus constituents rely on for advice and counsel.
Essential Functions:
Administer financial aid to students including first-year students, transfers, continuing students, student athletes, and all Veterans students. Performs needs analysis, resolves any errors and/or conflicting information before financial aid awards are completed and disbursed as defined by the federal, state, and institutional rules. Contact students and campus partners to resolve any issues.
Serves as a compliance liaison for SFS advisors in support of appeals and professional judgment. Serves students and families to facilitate solutions and resolves complex issues regarding their financial aid package, verification, satisfactory progress, or other financial aid concerns. The incumbent is an experienced authority for DES and th campus community.
Collaborate with SMU Athletics Offices to maintain NCAA financial aid compliance and effectively administer athletic aid, including adjusting budgets, awards and information based on appeals. This role is the point of contact for student athletes who need support with financial topics. This position keeps SFS leadership informed with matters of athletic compliance and policy and procedure updated.
Collaborate with SMU Veteran benefit entities to maintain funding compliance, effectively awarding and reconciling of Veteran Aid. Point of contact for students utilizing VA educational benefits who need support with financial aid topics and campus colleagues. Oversight of Principals of Excellence and institutional Veteran Aid budgeting. This position keeps policy and procedures updated.
Maintain up to date knowledge of the latest regulations as they pertain to financial aid and complete required training and other duties as assigned. Creates and presents financial aid presentations for both on and off campus. Responsible for projects or initiatives that have a defined scope, moderate levels of complexity and external visibility, and require autonomous (independent) execution.
As a leader, this position is expected to have expertise in working with students and families; the incumbent will train, mentor and impart knowledge to new and less experienced staff to establish appropriate student service methods and practices to ensure that new and less experienced advising staff members will meet the expected departmental standards in providing excellent customer service.
Attend all SFS and DES meetings and trainings. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required.
A minimum of four (4) years of experience is required. Candidate with financial aid or other financial aid services is required.
Working experience administering veteran aid is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Candidate must also demonstrate ability to learn new softwares.
Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
