Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field. Minimum of 5+ years of biosafety experience. Registered Biosafety Professional.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate Degree in Biology or related field. Three Additional years of biosafety experience.
Job Summary:
This position will support the Director of the Department of Biosafety, managing staff and projects while helping to maintain compliance and improving processes through expertise in all areas of the department.
Job Duties:
Provides assistance in managing the office and staff.Consult the Department Director in developing and improving departmental plans.
Assist the Director with Performance Reviews
Initiates audits to develop and ensure administrative and engineering controls are appropriate for the level of risk and design of the facility.
Monitors effectiveness of multidisciplinary problem-resolution activities.
Initiates benchmarking activities.
Coordinates and leads agency audits.
Recognizes and manages intricacies associated with various aspects of multidisciplinary projects.
Anticipates, develops and implements methods needed to remain state-of-the-art in the field.
Develops junior staff members through assignments, formal training, or other experiences – e.g., Assists staff with understanding how answers are derived.
Keeps current in the field and immediately utilizes and applies new information fully.
Identifies problems or non-compliance issues. Knows, understands, and identifies all areas of expertise needed to resolve problems and then coordinates a team of those with needed expertise.
Monitors and takes action on projects to ensure compliance with regulations.
Provides expert knowledge of diverse biological, physical, and general chemical-related hazards.
Recommends and/or develops action plans for problem resolution and coordinates with EHS when necessary.
Constantly seeks opportunities for process improvement.
Review proposed state and federal regulations and develop comments appropriate to
UTMB to be conveyed to UTMB, UT Systems, and regulatory agencies.
Provides training to faculty, laboratory staff, and students on proper biological safety standards and techniques.
Fosters a learning environment.
Chaired subcommittees and lead task forces.
Provides recommendations for building and/or renovation projects.
Acts as a Biological Health and Safety advisor to non-safety related committees. Conduct the annual review of the Institutional Emergency Operations Plan and the Institutional Preparedness Annual Program. Provide expertise in the development of Biosafety Continuity Plans and Responses.
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure. Performs related duties as required.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Thorough understanding of internal customer requirements for the safe usage of biologicals in research. Ability to analyze data and summarize multiple sources of information into coherent recommendations for action. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and the ability to appropriately apply them as they relate to Biosafety and business continuity management in the academic health sciences center setting. Ability to perform administrative planning, budgeting, supervision, and management. Excellent communications, interpersonal, and problem–solving skills with a high degree of professionalism and competence in dealing with a variety of individuals including administrative, academic, and medical professionals, peers, and public officials.SUPERVISION
