VITAL provides comprehensive services, programs, and resources to faculty across disciplines to foster engaged, inclusive, high quality student learning by supporting teaching excellence.

The Assistant Director for Instructional Technologies Integration, hereafter referred to as the AD, will report to the Associate Director for Digital Learning Pedagogy of VITAL and will work closely with the Associate Director to significantly expand VITAL’s capacity to support faculty’s purposeful selection and implementation of University-supported instructional technologies to improve students’ learning experiences and outcomes consistent with the goals of Villanova University’s Academic Strategic Plan.

The AD will support VITAL initiatives, programs, and services focused upon helping faculty in on-campus undergraduate and graduate programs identify relevant technologies available to them and purposefully integrate them into their course designs and pedagogy to deepen student learning. To this end, the AD will work with faculty and academic departments/programs to provide research-based support for the design, implementation, and assessment of instructional technologies consistent with teaching excellence in all course modalities.

Support Faculty and Departments in the Purposeful Selection and Use of Instructional Technologies at the Institutional Level

Support faculty in their purposeful selection and use of tools in the Brightspace LMS by understanding the opportunities and practical challenges faculty may face in its use, providing expert assistance, and actively participating with faculty in the design of their courses and/or course elements. Support faculty in their purposeful selection and use of University-supported instructional technologies, including instructional media production tools, educational software, physical classroom technologies, as well as emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) by providing expert assistance and actively participating with faculty in the design of courses and/or course elements. Help faculty, programs, and/or colleges implement instructional technologies that advance University, college, and/or programmatic strategic pedagogical priorities and initiatives. In consultation with the Associate Director and in coordination with UNIT-IT, help streamline and optimize the availability of relevant instructional technology resources, helping to ensure that faculty can easily access the tools and support they need. Research and evaluate pedagogical practices that pertain to emerging instructional technologies to inform VITAL’s support of faculty’s innovative use of technology in their teaching. In consultation with the Associate Director, implement feedback mechanisms to continually evaluate the effectiveness of VITAL’s support services helping to make data-informed adjustments to programs and resources on instructional technologies, helping to ensure continuous improvement and relevance.


Provide Faculty Instructional Development Support and Consultation

Informed by educational research, develop and implement targeted professional development programs, workshops, and resources that help faculty to effectively use the LMS, instructional media production tools, educational software, and physical classroom technologies. Consult with faculty and/or departments/programs virtually and in-person around the application of evidence-supported practices in the design and implementation of instructional technologies in all course modalities. Consult with faculty in the maximum instructional use of technology-enhanced classrooms. Help faculty identify and develop pedagogical use cases for available instructional technologies. Identify opportunities to give campus-wide visibility to innovative pedagogical use cases for instructional technologies through programming and internal publications/resources that facilitate peer-to-peer learning opportunities.
Nonessential Job Functions (Less Critical Responsibilities/Duties):

Stay current in educational development and/or instructional technologies field, including engaging with relevant professional associations. Support faculty research on teaching and learning with technology. Assist with maintaining VITAL’s website and contribute to the development of VITAL resources for faculty. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Formal Education Earned Master’s degree in instructional design, education, learning sciences and technology, educational technology, or a closely related field required. Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred.


Specific job Knowledge Extensive knowledge of teaching with technologies and learning experience design. Working knowledge of pedagogical issues related to learning, teaching, and assessment rooted in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in technology-enhanced contexts. Extensive experience designing learning experiences in an LMS, conferencing software (e.g., Zoom), and digital media development tools. Knowledge of accessibility and inclusive classroom design principles. Knowledge of emerging technologies, including A.I. and how they might be utilized to support engaged and inclusive student learning. Knowledge of effective practices related to faculty instructional professional development.
Minimum Work Experience Two to four years of experience in designing, managing, and assessing technology-enhanced instruction in direct support of faculty and/or teachers. Experience working with faculty and/or teachers across disciplines on their instructional professional development required.
Work Skills Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, ability to explain technical content in non-technical terms, problem-solving skills, ability to work collaboratively, and strong service-oriented approach to individuals across disciplines and career stages. Ability to work independently while establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with academic departments/programs, faculty, and staff across the institution as demonstrated in the instructional consultation statement. Sensitivity to academic disciplinary, departmental cultures, and faculty with various levels of experience in teaching with technology. Ability to articulate to faculty the benefits and drawbacks of various teaching and/or technological approaches in technology-enhanced learning environments. Excellent collaboration, planning, and organizational skills, and attention to detail as demonstrated in the cover letter. Commitment to helping provide inclusive learning environments in all instructional contexts as evidenced in the cover letter and instructional consultation statement. Understanding of effective practices related to faculty instructional professional development as evidenced in the instructional consultation statement. High-level proficiency in designing learning experiences using a range of instructional technologies and approaches.
Equipment Knowledge General office equipment Preferred Qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using technology in any course modality strongly preferred. Experience working in a university-based teaching and learning center strongly preferred. Experience working with Brightspace preferred.
