Title Assistant Director for the Bowdoin Outing Club Posting Number S01376JP Department Outing Club Job Summary This position will assist the Associate Director and Director of the Bowdoin Outing Club (BOC) in leading the largest student organization in daily operations, organized outings, and New Student Orientation Trips. This position blends administrative responsibilities with student mentorship, teaching, and outdoor field instruction for a variety of outdoor disciplines which may include whitewater kayaking, whitewater canoeing, whitewater rafting, backpacking, canoe tripping, winter camping, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, and telemark skiing, among others.

In addition to introducing students to various outdoor activities, the Assistant Director also works with students on honing their outdoor technical and leadership skills. The Assistant Director works directly with the trip leader training program, a semester-long program that teaches students how to effectively lead multi-day wilderness backpacking and canoeing trips for their peers.

The BOC is in a prime location for having access to amazing outdoor classrooms, including Maine’s Western Mountains and rivers, Baxter State Park, and the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The Assistant Director also works alongside the other BOC staff to develop and implement initiatives to improve access and opportunity to the outdoors for all Bowdoin students.

Education/Skills Requirements Required: A Bachelor’s degree is required. Applicants must possess the physical ability to undertake physical outings/trips requiring intense, specialized technical proficiency in the field for periods of up to 14 days, and to concurrently maintain technical proficiency in several outdoor recreational disciplines. Proven field leadership and teaching abilities with a clear understanding of field risk management and critical decision-making in the field are necessary. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required. Strong organizational and logistics management skills are essential. Proven ability to mentor and develop student leadership skills. Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents Required: A Wilderness First Responder certification and experience in outdoor recreation/education field, including extensive field experience. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated expertise in diverse outdoor pursuits e.g.winter camping, backpacking, snowshoeing, skiing, whitewater paddling, canoe tripping, etc.) A valid driver’s license is required along with the ability to meet the eligibility requirements for the College’s current Motor Vehicle Policy. Standard Work Days and Hours This is an exempt, full-time position (1.0 FTE) starting July 1, 2025. Administrative responsibilities may be handled during day shift hours (8:30 – 5:00). Evening and weekend hours are required to teach and run meetings.

*Outings and trips may require extensive time (2-14 days) in the field over weekends during variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions.

COMPENSATION The salary range for this position is expected to be: $59,000 – $63,000 annually.
