Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit Student Support Services (SSS) is a TRIO-grant support program designed to maximize academic performance for UNCG students who are first-generation, from modest income backgrounds, or who have a disability, and who also demonstrate academic need for services. Position Summary The Student Support Services (SSS) Classic and STEM-H programs are federally funded TRIO-grants designed to maximize academic performance for UNCG students who are first-generation, from modest income backgrounds, or who have a disability, and who also demonstrate academic need for services.
The Assistant Director for Tutoring manages the daily operation of the tutoring components for both SSS Classic and SSS STEM-H. The Assistant Director provides all recruitment, orientation, training and in-services to peer/professional tutors, SI, and FYE STEM-H instructors. The Assistant Director works closely with the TRIO staff to advise and support the 325 students enrolled in the SSS programs. Minimum Qualifications The candidate must have a Master’s degree in education, management, or related field. The candidate should have at least two year of experience in higher education. The candidate should also have some experience with first-generation and/or low-income college students. Percentage Of Time 30% Key Responsibility Orientation & training Essential Tasks Orient, train, and supervise all peer and professional tutors in collaboration with the TASP Assistant Director for Tutoring Services, as well as orient, train, and supervise Lab Monitors and graduate student workers. Assist with the coordination of the CRLA tutor certification process and proposal writing. Implement and oversee behavioral instruction and professional development instruction for tutoring staff. Percentage Of Time 30% Key Responsibility Relationships & marketing Essential Tasks Develop a positive working relationship with academic departments and faculty for the purpose of developing contextualized tutoring program and instructor and tutor recruitment; market the program for increased awareness in the community by creating bulletin boards and fliers, writing classified advertisements, and submitting relevant and updated information for website maintenance. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Evaluation Essential Tasks Evaluate tutee progress based upon tutor session reports daily and consult with appropriate SSS assistant directors and director for referral purposes. Provide student check-in meetings to talk about student’s progress in courses and to develop their professionalism and collaborative learning techniques. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Database management & reporting Essential Tasks Manage a MS Access database related to the tutorial function, session records, payroll, etc. Maintain accurate records and document all tutor instruction and hours. Track tutoring budget and number of staff we should hire each semester based on request trends and overall needs of students.
