Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications

The University of Virginia's number one ranked Department of Student Health and Wellness is seeking a well-rounded Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications. Reporting to the Associate Director, this position will aid in the department’s efforts in providing strategic direction, planning, coordination, implementation, evaluation and continual improvement of a comprehensive, culturally competent portfolio of communication strategies and collateral designed to:

Brand the Department of Student Health and WellnessIncrease understanding and awareness of Departmental services (Mental Health, Medical, Well-being, Care and Support, and Disability Access) and events and programs within the buildingPromote healthy behaviors, decision-making, and positive social change across the UVA community.

Specific responsibilities include:

Maintain and grow a consistent brand and message for the Student Health and Wellness department and building.Understand departmental mission and needs and translate strategic goals into operational efforts.Manage and maintain a comprehensive social media strategy and implementation (Instagram and Facebook) for the department, as well as individual programs, events, and services.Assist Well-being Services with the design needs of behavior-change and other public health initiatives including the Collegiate Recovery Program, and the Teaching Kitchen.Manage the design and creation of the Stall Seat Journal.Assist Counseling and Psychological Services with outreach marketing and group therapy promotion.Perform print and electronic publication activities including drafting, designing, and preparing materials for social media, newsletters, fliers, brochures, and digital signage.Work with approved vendors to manage departmental swag, promotional, and professional printed materials.Translate complex information into easy-to-understand health messages.Ensure that the department’s online presence is of the highest quality – editorially, graphically and consistent with University brand and graphic standards.Develop websites and maintain content. Prioritize digital accessibility and mobile responsiveness and utilize Google Analytics to make data-based web decisions and changes.Coordinate with University Communications, and other University partners to leverage communication opportunities on-Grounds to promote the department’s messages.Help Associate Director manage media requests and help coordinate responses.Supervise undergraduate student interns to accomplish marketing, communication, and program goals.

Required Qualifications: 

High school diploma; Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Marketing, Journalism, or related field is highly preferred.At least three years of relevant experience such as public relations, social media, brand management, marketing, advertising, communications, design and/or related field.Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of marketing and communication.Ability to execute a broad range of communications functions, including strong graphic design and multimedia skills.Knowledge of a variety of marketing channels, including print and web publications, videos/webinars, email, and social media.Advanced working knowledge of Web-based technology, social media, survey instruments, publication and media presentation software (i.e. Adobe Creative suite, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office suite).Experience with graphics and photo imaging software including Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop and Canva.Competent with Drupal web content management platform, as well as web design and development for mobile devices.Demonstrated artistic and design abilities, including knowledge of relevant design technologies, trends and techniques such as the creation of infographics, with the ability to create and work with both print and digital formats. Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.Excellent verbal, written, listening and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to clearly articulate complex information in multiple forums to a range of audiences.Ability to draw upon significant relationships with internal and external constituents as needed.Ability to be flexible, work independently, and be proactive with pursuing collaborations.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least five years of experience in public relations, social media, brand management, marketing, advertising, communications, design and/or related field.Demonstrated ability to effectively design and implement marketing and/or communications strategies for a major department within a college or university setting.Supervisory and management experience.

About the Position:

This position is eligible for some remote work. The anticipated salary range is $70,000.00 - 80,000.00 commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is an exempt-level position with UVa benefits. Employees’ benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
