Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), the Assistant Director of TRIO SSS assists in the coordination of TRIO Student Support Services programming to include workforce readiness, financial literacy, and leadership activities. This role acts as the lead academic advisor/coach by aiding with degree completion planning, course recommendations, and proactive advising/coaching for students not meeting satisfactory academic progress. The Assistant Director makes the appropriate recommendations to the Director on how to continually improve program services. The Assistant Director is also responsible for developing and facilitating group sessions and meetings that are sensitive to the needs and development of the program students throughout their academic experience.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with the overall administration of the TRIO Student Support Services grant.

Advise and counsel all program participants regarding educational issues such as university adjustment, major selection, study habits, academic expectations, and financial and career planning.

Assist with methods to recruit, select, and track eligible admitted students to the program and strategies to maintain engagement.

Aide in designing and coordinating new TRIO Student orientation.

Develop individual plans of action to enhance academic preparedness and success of students.

Assist the Director in assessing policies and practices for monitoring and improving student performance and student services.

Provide proactive academic guidance and skill building to support all TRIO students including participants with an early alert or probation status.

Oversee the tutoring component of the SSS Programs and ensure that students have access to academic support through monitoring semester schedules and mid-term grades. As needed, implement a system of tutoring evaluation to get student feedback and make appropriate recommendations for improvement.

Partner with the Office of Student Financial Services to assist with coordinating the financial aid services.

Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other departments such as Academic Advising, EOF, Career Services, Student Financial Services, Residence Life, Student Success, etc. to provide resources and support to students.

Oversee the Virtual Job Shadow, FOCUS 2, other career readiness platforms, and assist with Career and Graduate School exploration for TRIO SSS participants.

Maintain detailed quantitative and qualitative data on program participants for annual federal and institutional reports.

Establish and maintain partnerships with internal and external organizations for essential program goals addressing graduate school readiness and financial literacy.

Serve on institutional committees as assigned, advocating for TRIO students.

Acts as key personnel/administrator in absence of Director.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION:

REQUIRED:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in higher education, counseling, educational administration, or a related field.

Minimum two years of experience coordinating college programs or activities for diverse populations as well as academically or economically disadvantaged students.

Experience teaching, advising, counseling or leading the design, implementation and evaluation of academic support and/or retention services/programs.

Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to issues that concern low income, first-generation students and students who identify as having a disability.

Ability to work with an ethnically and racially diverse student population, including those at risk.

Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as familiarity with technology.

Excellent interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, and ability to work as part of a team.

Demonstrated knowledge and competency working with Google and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, & Outlook).

PREFERRED:

Previous experience working with TRIO SSS or similar federally funded programs is preferred.  

Experience working with first generation, low income, and students with self-identified documented disabilities.

Ability to advocate for students and connect them with appropriate resources;

Ability to develop working relationships with the various college departments and divisions;

Must have a strong sense of commitment and ethics; ability to maintain confidentiality.

Proficiency with use of technology and various database management systems a plus (Canvas, Blumen, Colleague, Banner, etc.)
