Job Summary
Indy Fresh Market is a new full-service grocery store near the Cook Medical manufacturing facility on 38th and Sheridan. In partnership with Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana (GCSI), the store will provide additional jobs and future educational opportunities for residents while also bringing a much-needed food source to the community.
The Grocery Assistant Site Leader works closely with the Site Leader and department leaders to drive operational excellence, customer satisfaction, employee development, and the store’s annual operating goals. The role requires leadership skills, operational oversight, and fostering a positive and productive store environment. In partnership with the Site Leader, the ASL will set and enforce best practices across all store functions. The ASL has direct management and development responsibility for six departmental leaders and the hourly grocery associates who report to them. This role models the standards for hiring, training, and developing top talent to build a high-performing team. Additionally, the ASL will act on behalf of the Site Leader in their absence. Flexibility in scheduling is required as store hours may fluctuate to meet operational needs.
Hours of Operation: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
Example Duties and Activities
Operations
Collaborates with the Site Leader and departmental leaders in achieving operational standards, financial goals, and best practices for facility appearance, merchandising standards, customer service expectations, regulatory compliance, and store culture.
Assists the Site Leader in implementing Lean Six Sigma strategies to improve processes, increase efficiency, and meet sales and quality targets. Evaluates operational trends and collaborates on action plans to meet operational objectives.
Monitors and communicates day-to-day store performance, proactively addressing any operational challenges. Works with leaders to resolve issues and follows up to ensure operational goals are being met.
Ensures customers receive exceptional service, fostering a welcoming environment. Leads efforts to answer customer inquiries, solves issues, and products are readily available and well-presented.
Manages and maintains safety initiatives, including hazard identification, safety audits, and ensuring compliance with OSHA, food safety laws, and all appropriate regulations. Ensures the store meets all health and safety standards.
Assists in managing operational inventory by tracking stock levels and ordering supplies, planning purchases, and coordinating with suppliers to ensure product freshness and full shelves.
Works with the Site Leader to establish staffing levels aligned with business needs. Actively participates in recruiting and interviewing candidates for all positions. Supports the Site Leader in managing labor costs within budgetary constraints.
Holds department leaders and staff accountable for meeting performance expectations.
Staff Management and Development
Helps to create and models a positive culture of open professional communication, immediate resolution of issues, and healthy confrontation within the site. Ensures and supports a cohesive leadership team that exemplifies professionalism and accountability.
Coaches, mentors, and manages the Department Leaders and their teams. Establishes performance objectives for all leadership staff, conducts regular reviews, and ensures performance standards are met. Confers with the Site Leader to address performance gaps and support professional growth.
Ensures all new leaders receive proper training and onboarding on store procedures, processes, and expected standards of performance. Directs management team in goal planning and implementation.
Conducts the recruitment, training, development, and performance management of the team.
Supports the Site Leader in planning and executing employee development and succession planning to build a pipeline of future leaders. Communicates clear responsibilities and expectations while working closely with staff to remove any significant work barriers to productivity and maintaining a motivated, high-performing workforce.
Manages staff per GCSI company principles and federal, state, and local laws ensuring the workplace is free from discrimination and harassment.
Financial Management and Reporting
Works with the Site Leader to review P&L statements and key performance metrics. Assists in identifying trends and developing strategies to protect and grow the business.
Helps forecast sales trends, and identify store needs within budgetary limits. Ensures operating expenses align with projected budgets.
Tracks and reports on store performance. Presents solutions to the Site Leader that contributes to efforts aimed at improving sales, increasing operating margins, and reducing costs by identifying opportunities for operational efficiency and growth initiatives.
Required Competencies
Degree and Credential Requirements - High school diploma or GED.
Grocery Operations and People Management - Has the ability or experience helping lead the grocery department teams in daily operational activities, including inventory management, compliance with regulations, health and safety standards, merchandising, and customer service, particularly in urban neighborhood settings. Assists in developing and implementing work standards while remaining adaptable to changing business needs. Helps coach and train supervisory and management staff to ensure achievement of employee and departmental goals. Promotes a positive and inclusive team atmosphere that values diversity. Assists with budget management, ensuring cost-effective operations. Previous experience with a start-up grocery operation is a plus.
