The Assistant Laboratory Manager will be responsible for supporting the Lab Manager to ensure that the department is functioning in a manner that both satisfies the scientific and business needs of Lactalis Quality Management, Corporate Manufacturing (Plant), Marketing and Research and Development, and complies with applicable regulatory requirements and department policies.
The position reports directly to the Lab Manager and supports in the decision-making process of reviewing and revising Laboratory protocols, certifications, methodologies and documentation in line with the Lactalis Corporate standards. Furthermore, the position spearheads projects for continual improvement and sits as representative of the lab in cross functional teams.

Key responsibilities for this position include:
Technical Responsibilities:
+ In charge of the administrative operation of the laboratory and timely execution of all tests run at the plant
+ Review of tests results and positive release of the product in SAP
+ Work closely with the LAB relay and the plant QC to understand and maintain the Cecalait proficiency and SRM Program(s).
+ Oversees the lab training program to maintain thorough knowledge and understanding of requirements, as well as a basic understanding of current procedures and methods pertaining to analytical testing.
+ Collaborate with direct reports during troubleshooting, sample design, testing, result interpretations, any follow-up required to resolve issues.
+ Defines under the direction of the lab manager, the projects needed for the improvement of the program.
+ Works with production and quality areas to reduce holds and complaints (CPM)
+ Oversees the effective implementation of the Shelf-life Program at the plant level and the analysis of results to define together with lab manager actions needed
+ Spearheads investigations with sanitation and production for out of spec microbiological results from equipment and product
+ Oversees all equipment at the lab: equipment qualification, calibration, maintenance
Managerial Responsibilities:
+ Manage lab employees: structuring and coordinating the efforts of the technical staff, anticipating and directing the resolution of any problems that may arise during testing
+ Structure and organize the efforts of the department staff in all areas related to testing such as scheduling and assigning staff time to meet needs, providing guidance in the conduct of sample preparations and sample analyses, schedule use of limited resources, coordinating timely completion of testing and reporting needs.
+ Approve and/or lead laboratory investigations regarding unexpected results.
+ Set and monitor reasonable policies and goals for the staff, collaborating with Human Resources to provide structure and oversight for the training and development of all incoming analytical staff.
+ Organizing department training activities, and assist in conducting annual performance evaluations for departmental staff
+ Oversees laboratory supplies and activities including equipment maintenance and coordinates new equipment installations which includes changes, where needed, to the laboratory
+ Cultivating long term relationships internally
+ All other duties as assigned
Requirements

Qualified applicants will contribute the following:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, analytical chemistry, or a related field.
+ 4-7 years of experience in a plant laboratory preferably Dairy
+ Strong basic laboratory skills (Chemistry and Microbiology)
+ Strong Mathematics knowledge including stoichiometry and statistics.
+ Strong communication skills to communicate direction and new methodology to technicians.
+ Strong Computer skills with a working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for report writing and presentation
+ Effective and proficient communicator, both written and verbal
+ Business acumen includes problem solving and analysis.
+ Able to manage time through efficient planning and organizing of daily work.
+ People Management skills
+ Proactive, flexible, analytical, and attentive to detail
+ Attention to detail and accuracy in work required.
+ Personal qualities of tact and dependability and the ability to work well with others in a team environment is required.
