Laboratory Assistants / Phlebotomists are non-professional personnel with training in areas of the clinical laboratory useful to the overall efficiency and smooth operation of the laboratory.  These areas include: phlebotomy, preparation of send out tests, answering the telephone, and assisting in the chemistry, hematology, and microbiology areas of the laboratory.  The purpose of the job description is to provide information on how this useful assistance can be given. In order to qualify for this position, one must be able to work independently and under the direction of a Specimen Processing Coordinator, Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Director. This person should be versatile in all aspects of the laboratory as well as a team player to assist performing all necessary specimen collections and processing alleviating the CLS form these tasks, which includes reference lab testing and microbiology set-ups.  This person must have an extensive computer and LIS capability and be able manage the workflow in the processing area including reference lab testing, microbiology setup and receiving and processing of samples from alternate facilities.

Qualifications High school education or its equivalent experience preferred.   An AA or Bachelor’s degree is desirable.Evidence of having completed an approved training program. 2 years hospital experience is desirable.Current California CPT I or CPT II.Good communication skills in English (verbally and in writing).Have good manual dexterity.Have at least two years of LIS experience and computer knowledge, or show proficiency.Have good organizational skills.
