Assistant News Director

 

 

CBS Detroit is seeking an Assistant News Director to lead collaboration in the development and leadership of CBS Detroit’s news operations with particular focus on digital and streaming content. To provide strategic leadership in the development of enterprise and differentiated content that will engage and grow viewers and users. 

 

This is strategic position will be responsible for leading the newsroom’s multi-platform content operation every day with direct oversight of broadcast, streaming and digital platforms. This position will lead newsroom managers in evolving workflows and priorities and must have proven successes in breaking down silos and conventions. The person selected for this position will have a clear track record and have experience and expertise in cultivating and growing digital and social platforms in major market newsrooms. The position will also be responsible for building successful and aligned streaming, broadcast and digital strategies to grow analytics for the platforms. 


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overseeing the daily execution of a multi-platform strategy of news coverage. Agenda-setting editorial content for proper platform delivery. Developing new, innovative workflows focused on growing the CBS Detroit news footprint. Crafting a planning strategy with team for future stories and guest segments on multiple newscasts and stream. Hire and lead direct reports with specific oversight of the digital and streaming operation. Oversee all aspects of the content generation and presentation effort with emphasis on developing and growing the production on the digital and social platforms. Lead all aspects of the aggressive coverage of breaking news while retaining focus on enterprise stories that reflect the communities we serve. Lead efforts in execution and communication across station departments to grow the digital business. Leading, mentoring, and growing team. Coordinate resources with other managers and day parts. Using data, research, and gut to strategically implement newscasts across all day parts. Work with other news managers to plan big, breaking, or special event news coverage.


PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree preferred Minimum of 5 years in newsroom management experience in medium/large market Outstanding news and editorial judgment in a competitive environment A track record in leading and innovating digital expansion in a broadcast newsroom Proven leadership in content development with an emphasis on digital and social platforms and success in growing analytics Strong communication skills and an expertise in teaching and mentoring change in a newsroom environment Proven ability to oversee a digital effort in a broadcast newsroom with specific expertise in deploying new and evolving techniques to build audience
