Assistant Professor Environmental Humanities and Social Science
The Department of Environmental Studies at the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY invites applications for an academic year, tenure track position at the Assistant Professor rank, to start in Fall 2025. We seek individuals who will advance research and teaching in Environmental Humanities. Disciplinary, or inter-disciplinary foci, may include (but are not limited to): history, philosophy, science and technology studies, sociology, the arts, eco-cinema, media, and cultural studies relating people to the environment.
With robust mentoring and research infrastructure support, new hires will be able to establish interdisciplinary connections, link with community groups and policymakers, and work within new research paradigms. The candidate would have the opportunity to connect with other units on campus and across our academic community, including Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences, the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at ESF, and the Digital Storytelling Studio, and programs at Syracuse University. The Syracuse area is also rich with opportunities for research, and ESF faculty are building collaborative, community-based research initiatives across several issue areas in the city and the surrounding region.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to build a strong research and/or creative scholarship program. The teaching responsibility is 5 courses per year, both undergraduate and graduate courses. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses in Environmental Humanities and/or Social Sciences, which could include courses such as Identity, Culture and Environment; Introduction to Sociology; Social Processes and the Environment; Eco cinema; Digital Humanities; Capstone Course for Environmental Studies, as well as a graduate level course in their area of specialization. The selected candidate will collaborate with colleagues and students across other disciplines at the College and within the broader academic community, and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Starting Salary: $78,000, DOQ

Required Qualifications:
+ Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Environmental Studies, Geography, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies or similar discipline by date of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ A scholar with expertise in Environmental Humanities.
+ An established record of, or demonstrable potential for, excellence in research, peer-reviewed publication and/or creative scholarship, and teaching.
