Position Summary:

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) in the College of Education (COE) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Math Education to become part of the teacher education program, graduate programs, and an integral contributor to the scholarly agenda of the department, college, and university. 

About Us:
The College of Education (COE) at FAU prepares educators (e.g., teacher and school leaders), related professionals (e.g., school counselors, behavior analyst, instructional designers), and speech-language pathologists. Florida Atlantic serves six public school districts, among which are two of the largest districts in the nation, Broward and Palm Beach County School Districts. The COE is home to five academic departments: Counselor Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and Research Methodology, and Special Education. The COE offers 37 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and nine certificates. The faculty is comprised of over 80 full-time faculty, instructors, and adjuncts. Faculty maintain robust research and service agendas, contributing to their field of study, the university, local and national communities.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic faculty who facilitate multidisciplinary programs within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI), to prepare professionals in education and related fields.  Undergraduate programs include: Elementary Education and Secondary Education with certification and endorsement in Reading and ESOL, and Early Childhood Education. Graduate programs include master’s degrees in: Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Education plus Certification, Elementary Education, Environmental Education, Reading Education, Educational Psychology, and Instructional Technology as well an Ed.S. and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

We seek a faculty colleague who will enhance, develop, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses.  The candidate must have the knowledge, skills, and disposition to teach across a variety of platforms (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous, and asynchronous online) and content areas (e.g., math instruction for elementary education and secondary education teachers).

This faculty member will be expected to:

Develop and maintain an active scholarly agenda in math education and STEM related topicsWork closely with doctoral students interested in math education and STEM related topicsTeach courses in math education and related fieldsCounsel teacher education students about career prospects and professional opportunities after earning a university degree and teacher certification or advanced graduate students earning a master’s or doctoral degreeAssist with recruitment of new students and retention of current studentsAdvise doctoral students and supervise doctoral student researchAssist with preparing reports or responses to teacher preparation and other mandates (e.g., Florida Department of Education candidate completion rates)Promote the mission and goals of the Department, College, University, and fieldSupervise students completing field experiences at various schools and community settingsParticipate in faculty meetings and department, college, and university committeesWork collaboratively and ethically with other faculty, staff, and studentsKeep abreast of current developments in the fields of math and science educationMaintain and demonstrate competence in teaching, research and professional activities, including participation in professional associations (e.g., National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, The Association for Science Teacher Education) and community servicePerform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in math education or related field; and, a minimum of 18 units of graduate coursework in math content and standards, math education methods, and other related topics;
• Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, conduct, and disseminate scholarly work;
• Demonstrated ability to effectively teach and supervise students using innovative instructional approaches, methods, and technologies to deliver instruction across formats (e.g., eLearning, hybrid courses);
• A record of engagement in professional service and community engagement activities that align with the advancement of math education and related fields.

Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have expertise in contemporary scholarship and theories related to curriculum and instruction in math education or related fields. Additionally, the candidate should have expertise in curriculum development, teacher preparation, technology integration, and educational research. The candidate should also be knowledgeable about current trends in the field, such as using artificial intelligence to enhance teacher preparation, and should be aware of approaches and educational programs in schools and agencies and a willingness to explore interdisciplinary scholarly work across DCI program areas.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate is desired to have effective oral and written communication skills, up-to-date technology skills, and experience using instructional technology to deliver eLearning and hybrid courses and supervision; and, highly rated experience teaching undergraduate and graduate level stand-alone courses in math education and across curriculum and instruction programs (e.g., elementary education, secondary education, and master’s, specialist, and doctoral programs).

The selected candidate for this position is required to submit an official transcript sent directly from the institution for the Provost’s credential file prior to the first day of employment. Similarly, for degrees from outside the United States, the evaluation by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts) is required for the Provost’s credential file prior to the first day of employment. Transcripts must be issued to Florida Atlantic University, not to the individual applicant.
