Job Summary
The College of Education invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
The Assistant Professor of Practice in Literacy Education delivers and supports the development of courses in literacy with a focus on early literacy and multilingual populations, which model the use of current research in teacher education and the learning sciences, with particular attention to issues of equity, social justice, and inclusive teaching practices. They will also engage in the professional community of OSU teacher education programs. OSU’s College of Education teacher education programs are designed to prepare excellent elementary and secondary school teachers who are ready to meet the needs and build on the assets of linguistically and culturally diverse students.
The Assistant Professor of Practice is responsible for teaching, professional intellectual engagement, and service through developing curriculum and teaching courses and providing intellectual leadership around early literacy education from a multilingual perspective in the Pre-Teaching, Education, and Teaching majors. Education and Teaching programs are offered both in-person at the beautiful Corvallis campus as well as through our top 10 online platform, Ecampus. Instruction will be delivered in a combination of in-person teaching on the Corvallis Campus and online course delivery.
The position carries the expectation of engagement in applied research in literacy, applied linguistics, English for Speakers of Other Languages ( ESOL ), and/or Dual Language (DL) education that supports continued programmatic innovation and reform. However, the 10% budgeted time for scholarly work and research, it is not designed for a scholar who wishes to devote significant time to research and publishing and does not carry an expectation of robust publication or independent pursuit of extramural funding.

Key Responsibilities
80% Professional Engagement, Instruction & Curriculum Development
Professional Engagement, Teaching & Field based Supervision of Teacher Candidates
+ Instructs courses in various delivery formats and classroom sizes for the college, including in-person, online, and hybrid
+ Supervises teacher candidates in field placements in areas of expertise
+ Uses the learning management system to deliver content and assessment of learning
+ Manages content, forums, and assignments
+ Communicates with students about content programming
+ Provides timely feedback on assignments
+ Collects feedback from students on course format, facilitation, and content
+ Participates in advising and mentoring students
+ Collaborates with co-instructors as needed.
+ Interacts with and supports cooperating teachers in the K12 schools who work with student teachers
+ Provides program support for students as they complete summative portfolios
+ Supports regular evaluation and updates of program curriculum along with other faculty
Course Development
+ Develops curriculum for courses designed to engage and challenge students
+ Modifies existing curriculum for course/program and develops new courses as needed
+ Ensures learning management site and syllabus meet College of Education and university requirements
+ Works in collaboration with other faculty members to ensure consistent course content and facilitation
+ Attends trainings and develops technological expertise as expected in courses delivered through OSU
+ Stays current in field through professional development to ensure that courses reflect latest professional knowledge and approaches. Contribute to equity, inclusion, and diversity as part of educational delivery by recognizing and addressing different constituent/learner needs and interests.
10% Research/Scholarly Work
+ Engages in scholarly activities using equitable and inclusive practices that contribute to effective program delivery and updates, and applied research at local or regional levels (e.g., program innovation, professional case or policy reports, invited presentations, advising government agencies or professional groups)
+ Disseminates applied research at the local, regional, and/or national levels through professional conferences and other professional interactions, including on issues of equity/social justice
+ Builds on local or regional knowledge and partnerships to deepen understandings that support program goals
+ Engages collaboratively with other faculty in seeking extramural funding that support program goals, with thoughtful engagement with diverse perspectives on the research team
10% Service
+ Participates on college and/or university service committees
+ Participate in service activities that contribute to a welcoming and respectful workplace environment
+ Supports outreach and relationship building with schools, school districts and other education stakeholders to ensure curriculum and program expectations are aligned
+ Provides intellectual leadership and curriculum guidance on elementary program instruction
What You Will Need
+ Master’s degree in Education or closely-related field
+ Graduate coursework and professional experience in early literacy development and instruction
+ Graduate coursework and professional experience in ESOL /Dual Language Education and applied linguistics
+ Current or previous teaching license in elementary or secondary education
+ Three to five years’ teaching experience in elementary or secondary education in U.S. public schools
+ Teaching and/or supervisory experience of teacher candidates within postsecondary education
+ Evidence of successfully integrating social justice principles in teaching practices at the postsecondary level, including evidence of meeting needs of learners from underrepresented backgrounds
+ Demonstrated experience applying technology to instruction
+ Experience working independently, collaboratively, and coordinating team tasks
+ Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
+ Ability to produce practice-oriented scholarship as demonstrated through publications and/or presentations
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
+ Doctorate in Education or a closely related field
+ Five or more years’ teaching experience in elementary grades in U.S. public schools
+ Reading/literacy licensure or endorsement
+ Recent graduate work or professional experience in early literacy development and instruction
+ ESOL and/or dual language licensure or endorsement
+ Background in teaching in various modalities and with different course sizes ranging from small to large formats
+ Demonstrated effectiveness in providing intellectual leadership in a teacher licensure program
+ Demonstrated experience in supervising teacher candidates in field placements
+ Demonstrated ongoing participation in professional development
+ Online course design and development experience
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
+ Typical office and classroom environment.
+ Local travel may be required if supervision of student teachers is part of workload.
+ Regular attendance at faculty and College meetings is required.
