Assistant Structural Designer - Food & Beverage (Kansas City)

Burns McDonnell’s world headquarters in Kansas City, MO, is looking for an Assistant Structural Designer to prepare 2D and 3D drawings supporting Food Consumer Products and general manufacturing projects. This position offers challenging work with significant project variety at a successful, growing company. The chosen candidate will work under the guidance of experienced structural engineers and designers to complete projects in food and consumer products, manufacturing, and commercial markets. Typical projects include design of both new and existing buildings as well as process and miscellaneous structures.

The Assistant Structural Designer will work on an integrated design team within our Global Facilities Global Practice to perform the following duties:

Assist in preparing detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using structural specifications, engineering calculations, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures. Use 3D CAD and other software, including Revit, AutoCad,Tekla Structures, and Bluebeam.Use 3D software to assist in modeling columns, beams, connections, and surfaces.Assist engineers to perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks. Design will be prepared using engineering standards and procedures.Assist with a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various components and refining rough sketches.Assist with initial rough designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.Assist with organizing and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner. Demonstrate knowledge of CAD standards and best practices.Learn and successfully apply company, client, and project drafting standards and procedures.Demonstrate ability to apply formulas, principles, and practices to complete required drawings.Demonstrate knowledge of assigned and related disciplines.Coordinate drafting activities with other designers, drafters, and design disciplines.Successfully communicate and correspond with internal design resources and external clients and personnel.Have the ability and experience to work independently and in a team environment as the project requires.Execute design changes and project drawing revisions.Maintain CAD proficiency and work toward mastering current CAD systems.May perform field inspections.All other duties as assigned.
