Assistant System Planning Engineer II
Summary

Leads research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA’s energy services.  Designs, constructs, and tests and operates equipment. Ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.

Utilizing advanced computer modeling tools, perform short term operational planning and long term transmission system planning through modeling and simulation of the power system to ensure the reliable operation of the existing G&T system, evaluate G&T development opportunities, and support internal and external interconnections.

Responsibilities Work with System Planning senior staff to learn the operational characteristics of the NYISO Bulk Power Electric system. Work with System Planning senior staff to gain knowledge of the Load Flow and Voltage analysis.  Begin to learn the basics of system stability analyses. Assist Senior Staff in determining the need for and benefits derived from system transmission reinforcements. Assist Senior Staff in conducting analyses of system conditions, system disturbances and system operations in order to assess system performance. Assist Senior Staff in conducting analyses to assess the electric system improvement programs of NYPA’s customers. Assist Senior Staff in the performance of generator interconnection studies or Operations Planning studies. Assist with the review of technical reports and NYISO planning studies. Assist Sr. Staff with issues relating to NYISO/NPCC/NERC compliance. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of bulk power electric system planning and operation practices, as well as transmission system equipment is desirable. Effective oral communication skills required to provide presentations on technical topics. Effective written communication skills required to write clear, concise technical reports. Ability to organize and prioritize a workload consisting of several projects in order to meet work completion schedules. Demonstrate flexibility in changing project requirements, priorities and assignments. Education, Experience and Certifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical & Computer Engineering required. Masters of Science in Electrical & Computer Engineering  preferred Exposure to electric utility industry preferred. Ability to pass EIT and work towards PE license. Physical Requirements Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time, use a keyboard and enter data, view monitors for prolonged periods of time; Ability to travel by auto, train, airplane to other destinations to attend meetings.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
