Assistant Vice President - Buying and Merchandising

Inviting applications for the role of Assistant Vice President, Buying and Merchandising

This role is focused on optimizing buying and buying operations through data-driven strategies. The AVP will lead a team to drive operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and profitability within the Retail merchandise business. This role demands a seasoned professional with strong analytical skills, buying expertise, and leadership abilities to achieve revenue and growth targets specific to the Retail industry.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement data-driven strategies for buying and merchandising aligned with company goals, market trends, and customer preferences within the Retail merchandise business. 

Oversee the execution of buying/merchandising, ensuring adherence to quality standards, brand image, and customer demands while optimizing operational efficiency. 

Utilize data analytics, market trends, and consumer behavior insights to refine buying processes, enhance customer experiences and drive excellence in buying function in the Retail sector. 

Implement technology solutions and systems to transform buying/merchandising, including Assortment planning, Inventory management and category PnL management.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as supply chain, sales, marketing, and operations to align buying with broader business objectives.

Manage and mentor a team of buying/merchandising professionals, providing guidance, setting performance goals, and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Conduct in-depth analysis of buying/merchandising metrics, including sales and stock planning, assortment planning based on customer profile, launch new items, brand/supplier performance and development, offer planning and execution, category margin management to drive continuous improvement

Stay updated on industry trends and monitor competitor activities to make informed decisions about buying within the Retail sector. 

Gather and analyze customer feedback and behavior data from interactions with operations to make data-driven decisions about staying relevant and improve customer experience.

Ensure optimal inventory levels, minimizing excess or obsolete inventory while maintaining appropriate stock levels for Retail merchandise. 

Establish and maintain relationships with vendors and service providers, negotiating terms, and ensuring timely and cost-effective procurement of buying resources. 

Provide regular reports and analysis on buying function performance, making recommendations for improvements and adjustments as needed.

Leverage data analysis on Discovering and purchasing new products based on the industry trends and customer need.

Involve in negotiating prices, quantities, and delivery timescales with the Vendors.

Manage end to end Buying Operations which includes Item Onboarding maintenance, Pricing maintenance, Vendor Onboarding etc.

Evaluate and manage Vendor related issues highlighted from the Buying Operation team.

Collaborate with Vendor to get information related to Item onboarding for New Launch or Seasonal transitions.  

Qualifications we seek in you

Minimum Qualifications / Skills

A bachelor's degree in business administration, Operations Management, Retail Management, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in Analytics are preferred.

Relevant years of progressive experience in buying and merchandising within the Retail industry, with relevant years in a leadership role. 

Proven track record of leading and managing teams in Buying and Merchandising, including setting strategic direction, overseeing execution, and driving results. 

Extensive experience in developing and implementing data-driven strategies to streamline buying and buying processes, considering factors like customer feedback, process efficiency, and competitive dynamics in the Retail sector

Preferred Qualifications/ Skills

Ability to think strategically in developing and executing long-term buying and merchandising strategies aligned with overall business objectives specific to the Retail industry. 

Strong leadership skills for guiding and managing a team, setting clear performance goals, providing mentorship, and fostering a collaborative work environment in the context of buying function. 

Proficiency in data analysis for interpreting complex datasets, sales trend analysis, and customer feedback and market trend insights specific to buying within the Retail merchandise business. 

Solid understanding of financial metrics, budgeting, and category PnL in the context of buying. This includes managing category budgets and driving topline and bottom line.

Proficiency in specialized buying and analytics software used for efficient buying, inventory management, and margin optimization in the Retail sector. 

Experience with analytics platforms like Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, or similar software for in-depth data analysis and informed decision-making for buying and merchandising processes. 

Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) used for managing buying processes, including inventory management and financials.
