The University of Virginia’s Center for Comparative Medicine is seeking Assistant Vivarium Supervisors.
Assistant Vivarium Supervisors work closely with research animals and is responsible for maintaining and assessing their health, provides moderately complex support for research labs or facilities, assisting with routine research, writing, and administrative work, performs a variety of tests, and sets up equipment and materials for course instruction.
The mission of the Center for Comparative Medicine is to support biomedical research and teaching that utilizes laboratory animals. The Center does this in a manner which promotes the policies set by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) whose charge is to oversee compliance by personnel at the University of Virginia with federal regulations and guidelines.
Assistant Supervisor Duties Include:
Perform all tasks of Animal Caregiver 1 employees, including inspection and maintenance of animals, disposal of carcasses, tracking and recording data, and keeping detailed records.
Oversee and monitor animal husbandry activities.
Ensure that daily activities are conducted according to biosafety procedures and that other staff are aware of requirements.
When required, administer experimental treatments to animals via gavage or injection.
May provide functional supervision in the absence of Vivarium Supervisor.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One year of laboratory experience; Preference will be given to applicants with lab or animal handling experience
Licensure: ALAT level certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Vaccination: A pre-employment health screening is required. This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002.
Anticipated hiring range (commensurate with qualification and experience); $22 - $26 per hour; These are full-time position with UVA benefits:
Physical Demands:
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
