The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs has an immediate opening for an Associate Director, The Evolving International Order. Under the guidance of Center Director and Jeane Kirkpatrick Professor of the Practice of International Affairs Meghan O’Sullivan -- who serves as a principal investigator (PI) for this research stream – the Associate Director will lead the day-to-day management of this research area, including research deliverables, programmatic activities, and budget. This person will be responsible for collaborating closely with the Senior Advisor and Director of Special Initiatives and other members of the Center’s leadership team on an overall strategy for the program, specific research milestones, and signature convenings or publications. We expect this role will collaborate with additional faculty PIs as the research projects within this program are further developed.
The successful candidate should be a self-starter who is passionate about the Belfer Center’s mission, with experience in research and a proven track-record of putting ideas into actionable programs. This individual needs to be a great communicator, with a minimum of 7 years of experience in foreign policy, national security, and/or diplomacy in the United States or internationally.
The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is the hub of Harvard Kennedy School's research, teaching, and training in international security and diplomacy, environmental and resource issues, and science and technology policy. The Belfer Center was named a “Center of Excellence” by the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program in 2021 – the last year of its ranking program – in recognition of the Center’s six consecutive years as the world’s #1 university-affiliated think tank.
The Center has a dual mission: (1) to provide leadership in advancing policy-relevant knowledge about the most important challenges of international security and other critical issues where science, technology, environmental policy, and international affairs intersect; and (2) to prepare future generations of leaders for these arenas.
As the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs celebrates 50 years of impactful research and policy analysis at the nexus of science and international affairs, we are developing new strategic research streams at the intersection of three key drivers shaping our future: technology and geopolitics, the energy transition, and a changing global order. A priority effort for the Belfer Center in the coming year will be to solidify multiple lines of research within this third driver -- examining major shifts in the international order and ways to shape it positively. This research area, focused on shaping the emerging global order, aspires to conduct and amplify scholarship across several developing trends – particularly the rise of Middle Powers, changing dynamics in Europe in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the growing cooperation between Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.
