Assoc Director Clinical Research Informatics, Mobile Health

UT Health San Antonio is building toward comprehensive informatics support for clinical studies.  There is a growing need for data collection from devices in clinical research including wearable, implantable and home monitoring devices, as well as data collection from mobile computers such as tablets and smart phones. The incumbent’s primary focus will be supporting clinical investigators and research teams through the design, development, validation, implementation and evaluation of device-based data collection in clinical studies. Responsibilities will include device-based data acquisition, integration and management in clinical studies. In keeping with our intent for the Faculty Specialist role, the incumbent will pursue applied and basic research questions and opportunities that arise from operations.

We seek a senior informaticist with broad clinical research informatics experience and a deep specialization in data collection from mobile devices. The device-based data acquisition and integration we seek to support occurs in the context of clinical research and requires more advanced skills than those possessed by typical research data managers. As such, the incumbent must also have a significant track-record in clinical research data management and may be called upon to oversee Data Management operations on large or complex studies. As a Faculty Specialist, the incumbent should have a track-record supportive of their filling the project Director or co-investigator leadership roles in clinical studies and projects with complex data acquisition and integration.

Job expectations for a device/mobile health informatics Faculty Specialist:

·         *Serve as the institutional point of contact for investigators needing device-base data acquisition on clinical studies

·         *Draft software requirements for selection or development of devices for studies.

·         *Manage software development, usability testing, implementation and evaluation of Health applications for clinical studies

·         *Work with the Epic team for those few cases needing integration in local care settings.

·         *Maintain a working knowledge of the Health Level Seven (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) family of standards including actively participating in HL7 to influence or lead the development of research-relevant standards and stay abreast of standards implementation issues.

·         *Advise investigators, study teams and research infrastructure teams on research data standards selection and implementation

·         *Personally support and potentially serve as Program Director or co-Investigator on NIH grants, contract and other informatics projects involving complex device, data integration or standards implementation such as direct acquisition from EHR’s, use of HL7 FHIR standards and studies with multiple and novel data sources.

·         *Manage implementation of real-time HL7 FHIR-based data acquisition for the institutional data warehouse from partners such as the University Health System and HASA, the regional Health Information Exchange.

·         *Manage the Clinical Research Informatics Specialist group including hiring, training, assigning and overseeing the work of Clinical Research Informatics Specialists and the Research Data Navigator role (helping investigators identify the best methods for data collection and processing for studies).

The Associate Director of Clinical Research Informatics, Mobile Health will report to the Division Chief of the Clinical Informatics Research Division in the Department of Population Sciences within the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.
