Associate Chief Nursing Officer - Emergency Department & Critical Care

Reporting to the CNO, the ACNO is responsible for defining, planning, implementing and monitoring patient care delivery, fiscal management, human resource management and departmental operations for the defined care areas. The ACNO assumes a leadership role in developing policy and standards that allow staff to excel within their domain of patient care services and to attain their operational goals.

Job Description:

Health Care Environment

Maintains knowledge of current nursing practice, patient care and delivery systems

Directs the development, interpretation, implementation and maintenance of standards of nursing practice, policies, procedures and protocols which guide the scope and conduct of patient care provided by nursing staff to the patient population served

Ensures compliance with State Board of Nursing and regulatory agencies i.e. Joint Commission, Department of Public Health, Centers for Medicare/Medicaid

Uses evidence-based practice and outcome measurement to influence change

Upholds patient safety systems, monitors clinical activities and identifies risks

Accountable for patient care quality improvement goals and objectives. Works collaboratively with Department of Quality and Safety to ensure process improvement

Develops performance improvement programs in association with the appropriate medical director(s) and surgical members of the medical staff to support the system’s overall strategic and tactical plans

Serves as a leader in patient experience and patient and family centered care, assuring that a supportive environment is maintained and enhanced throughout Emergency Services

Works collaboratively with peers and subordinates to improve the overall experience of care for patients and families

Financial Management

Manages financial resources and develops business plan in collaboration with CNO and Chair/Medical Director

Articulates business model and translates into operational plan

Develops, monitors and maintains budget

Human Resource Management

Leads workforce planning and is a champion for selecting top talent, reward and recognition, diversity, performance management and human resource regulatory guidelines

Creates opportunity for colleague involvement and shared decision-making

Mentors and develops pathways to leadership and professional development

Strategic Management

Analyzes situations and develops strategic direction, recognizing gaps to desired outcomes

Measures and analyzes performance for departmental and organizational processes and outcomes

Information Management and Technology

Identifies nursing data to evaluate practice

Interprets relevant benchmarking data and demonstrates awareness of technology trends that impact patient care

Participates in the evaluation of information systems in the practice setting

Communication and Relationship Building

Informs and advises the CNO of all current trends, problems, activities within the area of responsibility

Maintains visibility and presence in all areas of medical center Builds trusting collaborative relationships with peers, staff, physicians and other disciplines. Serves as liaison between nursing and other areas. Leads committees relevant to clinical practice areas

Engages staff and others in shared-decision making. Promotes shared governance model in nursing practice

Collaborates with physicians to develop patient care policy

Leadership

Possesses foundational thinking skills to address ideas and critically analyze departmental and organizational issues and initiatives

Maintains curiosity and eagerness to explore new knowledge and ideas

Values and acts on feedback that is provided on own strengths and weaknesses.

Promotes systems thinking

Serves as a professional role model and mentor to managers and future nurse leaders

Serves as a change agent and facilitates others in understanding importance and the process of change

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Masters degree required. BSN required. Doctoral degree preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:  Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts license to practice as a Registered Nurse required

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

A high level of interpersonal skills necessary in order to provide effective leadership to nursing managers and staff and to effectively communicate with a wide variety of Lahey Health System colleagues and outside agencies.

A high level of analytical skills necessary in order to develop and implement new nursing systems, techniques and procedures; determine needs for capital equipment, staff, expense and revenue budgets; and prepare special and recurring reports or analyses.

Experience:  Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive  clinical and management responsibility.  Proven track record as both a nurse and a clinical manager/director.
