Associate Counsel/Senior Counsel
**Associate Counsel:**
**Required Qualifications (as evidenced from an attached resume):**
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited ABA law school (or foreign equivalent). Admission to the New York State Bar in good standing (or eligibility for admission within six months). Two (2) years of full time experience advising on student affairs-related legal matters.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
Legal experience working in higher education and/or government law. Experience advising clients on multifaceted and complex legal issues, especially involving governmental entities.
**Brief Description of Duties:**
Stony Brook University seeks an experienced and versatile attorney to join the Office of General Counsel in providing legal counsel on a wide range of issues related to higher education law. This Associate Counsel will spend significant time on student affairs matters, including student conduct, student-focused federal and state regulatory compliance (including FERPA, Title IV of the Higher Education Act, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Clery Act), speech and expression, harassment and discrimination, disability accommodation, and policy development and revision. Responsibilities will also include providing general legal advice across a broad spectrum of issues relating to higher education, including research misconduct, international affairs, academic/affiliation and other agreements, and responding to subpoenas and investigations. The successful candidate will work with Community Standards, the Office of Global Affairs, the Office for Research and Innovation, and other campus clients as the needs of the office dictate. They may also represent the campus in agency proceedings and interact with investigators, opposing counsel, and other external parties. Incumbent must have the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing priorities and objectives. Superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, as well as strong analytical and legal research skills are essential.

**Senior Counsel:**

Five (5) years of full time experience advising on student affairs-related legal matters. Experience in independent complex case management.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
Legal experience working in higher education and/or government law. Experience advising clients on multifaceted and complex legal issues, especially involving governmental entities.

The Senior Counsel will be expected to handle complex and high-level matters and have a high level of autonomy, for example, in interacting with outside/opposing counsel, advising on and developing policies and procedures, managing significant litigation matters and complex investigations, and advising senior administrators. Incumbent must have the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing priorities and objectives. Superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, as well as strong analytical and legal research skills are essential.

**Special Notes:**
This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
