Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept Portland State’s 49-acre downtown campus exhibits Portland State’s commitment to sustainability with green buildings and many of the 124 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees incorporate sustainability into the curriculum. PSU’s motto, “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” inspires the teaching and research of an accomplished faculty whose work and students span the globe.

The Office of Academic Innovation (OAI) provides leadership and support for campus activities that explore and promote excellence in teaching and learning, innovative curricular technology use, and community-based learning. OAI serves as a thought leader and thought partner for campus initiatives such as changing curricular and educational delivery models, improving student success, and advancing teaching, learning, and assessment practices. OAI works with individuals and departments, convenes learning communities, engages in campus-wide conversations, and develops digital resource materials.

The OAI staff includes individuals with expertise in organizational development, instructional design, community-based learning, assessment, curriculum and instruction, adult learning, instructional technology, multimedia development, and educational leadership. Position Summary The Associate Director for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment will work with the Associate Vice Provost, as well as staff, faculty, and administrators to develop, implement, and evaluate educational development programs sponsored by the Office of Academic Innovation.

The Associate Director of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment will partner with PSU units and programs to promote Office and University initiatives. This individual will support the development and implementation of effective and sustainable program assessment within the institution’s academic units, evaluate programs using a variety of methods, and make recommendations based on program data. The Associate Director will provide consultation on effective teaching and the use of assessment for teaching, learning, and student success. The Associate Director will consult with faculty and academic units regarding educational development needs and goals and oversee the planning and implementation of orientations, workshops, faculty learning communities, and campus-wide events. This leader will mentor and supervise the work of OAI teaching support staff and represent OAI on appropriate University governance committees.
The higher education landscape is rapidly changing. The Office of Academic Innovation (OAI) provides leadership and support for PSU initiatives that respond to these rapid changes, including evolving curricular and educational delivery models and innovative technology use. Each position at OAI therefore requires: a strong interest in innovation in higher education, a positive, forward-looking attitude – a high level of creativity and problem-solving ability, and the capacity to support faculty and staff through change (change management).

It will be critical for the Associate Director to stay current with emerging and state-of-the-art learning developments in pedagogy to enhance the unit’s knowledge base and benefit PSU Faculty.

This work requires face-to-face interaction with supervisors, OAI staff, team members, and faculty. Presence in the OAI office space is essential for the duration of the business day. Minimum Qualifications Ed.D or Ph.D. in education, adult learning, organizational development, or related field and three years relevant experience. At least three years of experience directly supervising a team. Demonstrated experience building and maintaining positive working relationships with diverse faculty and staff. Scholarship and demonstrated experience in assessment theory, methods, and best practices. Preferred Qualifications • Broad knowledge of teaching, learning and assessment research, best practices in higher education teaching and learning, program and institutional assessment, best practices and models in higher education
• Experience with and/or interest in learning analytics and student success data
• Knowledge of faculty and organizational development trends and practices
• Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environments
• Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as facilitative and group leadership skills
• Demonstrated experience building and maintaining positive working relationships with diverse faculty and staff
• Strong organizational, project and strategic planning skills

Work Days/Hours Presence in the OAI office space is essential for the duration of the business day, Monday through Friday 9:00am-5:00 pm, and may involve occasional evening and weekend hours to oversee various responsibilities as needed. Hybrid work may be available, dep Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be $72,732 – $96,384, but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
