Associate Director for UVA Health Construction

The University of Virginia’s Capital Construction and Renovations (CC&R) team is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as the Associate Director for UVA Health Construction. This is an exciting career opportunity to lead a team overseeing the construction and renovation of patient care, clinical and research facilities, as well as the upgrade and replacement of critical building infrastructure systems at UVA Health.  UVA Health consists of the University Medical Center, Community Health, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, Community Health Medical Group, and University Physicians Group.

The Associate Director will play a key leadership role, facilitating communication and coordination among Facilities Management, UVA Health, the Office of the University Building Official, and the Office of the Architect for the University throughout the programming, design and construction processes. This position offers a unique chance to apply deep expertise to guide the design and construction of technically complex and logistically challenging healthcare and research facilities.

This role oversees approximately 15 direct and indirect reports, navigating the full employment life cycle with the goal of recruiting and developing exceptional talent.  We value and foster an inclusive work environment, and the Associate Director is responsible for cultivating teamwork and enabling diverse perspectives to positively enrich the organization. 

The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in developing and executing strategies, with a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage a large variety of capital projects. The successful incumbent will achieve results by cultivating relationships, assembling appropriate resources, managing communication among stakeholders, monitoring timelines, securing adequate staffing, and providing guidance and customer service to ensure seamless execution. As an organizational leader, this role requires positive communication and a productive interface with a variety of stakeholders to achieve results. 

Key Responsibilities:

Lead teams managing a significant portfolio of construction and renovation projects, ensuring high-quality delivery and alignment with institutional goals.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement operational strategies and master plans that support UVA Health's mission.

Oversee the financial management of project budgets, scope of work decisions, and outsourcing solutions as needed.

Monitor workloads and staff resource utilization. Partner with other CC&R Associate Directors to ensure projects are staffed appropriately. 

Be an active and valued participant on the CC&R leadership team.

Support the professional development of staff, including Project Managers, Project Coordinators, and other team members, fostering a culture of growth and excellence.

Establish the expectation of fairness and respect to all parties. Educate and model what it means to be a good steward of the resources entrusted to us.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Business or related discipline.

Minimum of seven years of directly related experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of healthcare and/or research facilities, with a focus on technically complex and high-stakes environments.  Extensive management experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Capital Construction & Renovation is responsible for the management and execution of construction and renovation projects across UVA Grounds including UVA Academic, UVA Health, UVA College at Wise, and other off-Grounds locations across Virginia.  We aim to set the standard for excellence in higher education and healthcare project delivery. We provide management of all design and engineering services in partnership with the Office or the Architect for the University, management of all construction services and procurement for all construction contracts and design/engineering professional services contracts for the University community.  

Compensation:

The Anticipated minimum salary for this position is $160,000, commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:
