Reporting directly to the Director of Campus Recreation, the Associate Director – Programs & Assessment will serve on the department leadership team and oversee a team of professionals. The Associate Director is responsible for the daily operation, staffing, budgeting, and strategic visioning for multiple program areas within the Department of Campus Recreation. The Associate Director of Programs and Assessment will be responsible for coordinating the research and assessment initiative of the department as well as leading all wellness initiatives and providing management of special events. This individual will be a fundamental team member of the Campus Recreation Department, which provides aquatic programs, club sports, fitness/wellness, intramurals, outdoor recreation, special events, extramurals, and collaborative programs.

Responsibilities

Departmental Management

Manages the day-to-day operations of the program areas of Campus Recreation. This may include Intramurals, aquatics, club sports, nutrition, fitness, youth programs, esports and special events.Develops and maintains policies and procedures for Competitive Sports (intramurals, club sports and esports), Fitness, Nutrition, Aquatics and Youth Programs.Compile, prepare, and maintain records for overall department such as budget, participation numbers, injury reports and incident reports.Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal health, safety, and employment laws and regulations.Coordinates with third party vendors as it pertains to hosting of large-scale activities and events within Campus Recreation Programs.Serves as the primary point person for all special events within the department of Campus Recreation.Establish and maintain partnerships within the division and across the institution that will grow and promote the wellness initiatives at Utah State University.Plan, organize, market, and carry out special recreation related events such as Wellness Fairs, Races, etc.Research new trends and grow activity offerings based on university needs and industry trends.Participate in strategic planning.Ensure long and short-term goals of the department and division are being met.Understand and represent the mission and vision of Utah State University and the Department of Campus Recreation.Work evenings and weekends, as needed.

Personnel Management

Manages personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, disciplinary functions, and all associated paperwork.To include oversight of (2) Program Coordinator IIs, (1) Registered Dietitian, (1-2) Manager IIs and up to (3) graduate teaching assistants.Ensure delivery of a comprehensive student development program for student staff within Campus Recreation Programs.

Budget Management

Develop, monitor and adhere to the Programs budgets.Reviews expenditures, approves purchases, and determines labor budget.Propose and develop new revenue streams for Campus Recreation.Manage sponsorship donations from USU and community entities as it pertains to Campus Recreation Programs.

Research & Assessment

Maintain the assessment agenda of the Campus Recreation department.Evaluate over programs and services to determine effectiveness and satisfaction, providing suggestions for change based on data analysis.Create and evaluate all community outreach programs and services to ensure we are meeting the needs of regional communities.Continue the implementation and review of annual assessment of student and program learning outcomes.Produce annual end of year report.

Other

Prepare written communications such as monthly/annual reports, safety reports, participation statistics, etc.Actively participate on a variety of Aggie Recreation Center, Campus Recreation, Division of Student Affairs and University committees as assigned.This position description indicates the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferably with a major in sports management, recreation administration, physical education, kinesiology/exercise science, business administration, or a related field.Equivalent of five years full-time, professional level experience managing and developing facility operation management, program management, or other community recreational programs during which time the applicant has acquired and demonstrated the ability to perform the essential duties of the position.Ability to work varying hours including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in related field.Six or more years of professional experience overseeing facility operation management or recreation program management.Standard Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED and/or instructor certificationActive involvement in NIRSA – Leaders in Collegiate Recreation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

Knowledge of administration, personnel & organizational management, budgeting, computer hardware/software operation, principles of superior customer service, and effective marketing.Ability to interpret and apply university, Aggies Recreation Center, Campus Recreation, and USU rules, regulations, policies and procedures.Possess skills to establish programmatic goals, facilitate change, and implement innovative programs and services.Ability to oversee the work of others.Ability to coordinate the timely completion of multiple tasks.Ability to work independently under general supervision and as a part of a team to reach set goals.Possess skills to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and be able to generate and follow verbal and written instructions.Provide excellent customer service. Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
