This position combines academic excellence in teaching with administrative leadership to oversee curriculum development and program direction. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for civic education, a commitment to fostering intellectual diversity, and the ability to develop impactful programs that engage students and the broader community.
Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. or terminal degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Education, or a related discipline. For Associate rank: At least 5 years of demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. For Full Professor rank: At least 8 years of demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Experience in curriculum design and academic program development. Proven leadership experience, preferably in an academic or civic organization setting. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences. Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and follow-through. Ability to inspire and mentor students and faculty, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. Knowledge of best practices in civic education, public service, and community engagement. Preferred Qualifications Connections with civic organizations, government agencies, or industry leaders. Essential Functions and percent of time: Curriculum Development 20% Design and implement a forward-thinking curriculum that promotes civic education, leadership, and engagement. Regularly assess and update courses to ensure alignment with evolving civic challenges and workforce needs. Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and external stakeholders to create interdisciplinary courses and programs that address real-world issues. Lead the development of new certificates, minors, and degree programs that emphasize civic leadership and public service. Develop material appropriate for engagement outside of higher education such as K-12 and members at WPAFB.
Teaching 60% Teach undergraduate courses in civic education, public policy, leadership, or related areas Foster a dynamic classroom environment that encourages critical thinking, civil discourse, and intellectual curiosity. Incorporate innovative teaching methods, including experiential learning, case studies, and simulations, to engage students effectively. Supervise and mentor students in their academic and professional development, including advising on research projects, internships, and career goals. Essential Functions and percent of time (cont'd): Other 20% Serve as a thought leader on civic engagement by contributing to conferences, workshops, and public forums. Provide visionary leadership for the center setting strategic goals and objectives. Oversee program administration, including budgeting, faculty recruitment, and student enrollment. Represent the program within the university and to external stakeholders, including community organizations, government agencies, and industry partners. Foster partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations to enhance the program’s impact and visibility. Engage with community partners, to include members at WPAFB, to advance the mission of the Civic Center and the university.
