Associate General Counsel - Government Relations and Public Affairs
Help shape the future of blood donation and healthcare policy with Vitalant. We are seeking an Associate General Counsel – Governmental Relations and Public Affairs to play a key role in advancing our mission: to save and improve lives through blood donation and transfusion medicine. In this role, you will lead Vitalant’s public policy strategy, engaging in government relations, public affairs, and grant sourcing while also providing legal counsel on key areas such as real estate, intellectual property, artificial intelligence, supply chain management, and contracting. You’ll also support litigation, risk assessment, corporate filings, labor and employment matters, and regulatory compliance. If you're a strategic legal professional passionate about making an impact, we’d love to hear from you.   As an Associate General Counsel – Government Relations and Public Affairs, you'll get to: Shape Policy & Advocacy – Monitor legislation, engage with government entities, and advocate for policies that support Vitalant’s mission.Provide Legal Counsel – Advise leadership on compliance, regulatory matters, and risk management across healthcare, transfusion medicine, and nonprofit operations.Manage Contracts & Legal Documents – Negotiate, draft, and standardize complex commercial contracts while maintaining legal documentation systems.Support Litigation & Investigations – Assist in managing claims, litigation, and regulatory inquiries to protect and strengthen the organization.Drive Public Affairs & Funding Initiatives – Identify grant opportunities, manage applications, and foster relationships with key stakeholders to support Vitalant’s growth and impact. Knowledge/ Education  Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited College of Law required.  Working knowledge of federal, multi-state, and local regulations pertaining to transfusion related services preferred.    Licenses/ Certifications Licensed in Arizona to practice law or eligible to register as in-house counsel in the State of Arizona required.    Experience  At least six years’ legal and government experience, with a combination of law practice in a law firm and/or in-house legal department, as well as relevant government leadership experience required.  Three years of experience working successfully with hospitals, health systems and/or pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturer or distributor preferred.  In-depth experience in contract law, with broad background in drafting and negotiating agreements across multiple areas of business required.  Labor and employment experience preferred.  Clinical research experience preferred. Experience working in an in-house corporate environment preferred.    Skills/ Abilities  Must possess the skills and abilities to successfully perform all assigned duties and responsibilities.   Must be able to maintain confidentiality.  Must be highly organized and able to identify and analyze complex issues and develop creative solutions.  Must be able to work independently and frequently without direct supervision and establish priorities while managing multiple projects.  Must have a strong customer service orientation and a high level of personal integrity. Excellent oral and written business communication skills.  Able to organize, prioritize, and efficiently execute a variable workload and multiple priorities.  Ability to evaluate multiple business objectives across the system and analyze large risks in light of business goals.  Functions at a skill level, knowledge and judgment that permits independent action, subject to oversight by EVP, Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel.  Ability to travel, as needed.
