Associate Geochemist / Hydrogeochemist (Mining)

You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you. **A little more about your role:** WSP has a new opportunity for a Principal to Technical Director Level Geochemist / Hydrogeochemist to join our UK & Ireland Mine Water Team on a full-time basis based in the UK or Ireland. We are looking for an experienced consultant to provide consulting services and deliver geochemical and the geochemical component of multi-disciplinary studies to our clients. This position largely focuses on the geochemical characterisation and assessment of water-rock interactions for the prediction, prevention, and management of metal leaching and acid rock drainage in mining projects. You will be working on a range of local and international projects and your geochemical expertise will be called upon across a breadth of sectors and projects. The successful candidate will have previous consultancy experience and a history of successful client management preferably in the mining sector. **Key duties and responsibilities of the Job include:** + Project coordination and client liaison on a national and international basis + Oversight, senior mentoring and review to deliver mine water and geochemical studies for our clients + Working with our international team of geochemists and multidisciplinary team members on projects including permitting, baseline studies, feasibility studies, operational support, and reclamation/remediation, in particular for the mining industry, but also for other industries + Understanding of regulations and best practice guidelines in the UK / Ireland and internationally + Design of geochemical characterisation plan fit for the regulatory environment, client needs and reporting code + Management of geochemical and water quality datasets, including QA/QC + Interpretation and reporting of geochemical laboratory and field tests for geochemical characterisation studies for environmental media including soil, water, mine wastes and ore + Carrying out impact and risk assessments in conjunction with surface water and groundwater professionals; Understanding geochemical source term development + Preparing, reviewing and delivering technical reports, and presenting results to clients + Project-based travel and site work working away from home both in the UK/Ireland and overseas. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client needs + Business development activities including proposal and bid preparation, marketing activities, and supporting participation in trade shows and conferences + Collaborating at all levels of the Mining Team to strategise and implement business objectives + Project management, including understanding and implementing relevant business systems + Modelling health and safety awareness, promoting a health, safety and security culture, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to health and safety policy and procedures **What we are looking for you to demonstrate:** + An advanced degree (MSc or Ph.D) or equivalent in geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, applied or environmental geology or environmental chemistry preferred + Knowledge and application of geochemical and mass transport modelling codes, for example PHREEQC, MIN3P, and/or Geochemist’s Workbench would be advantageous + Experience in GoldSim water quality modelling would be advantageous + Experience of developing and overseeing geochemical characterisation and modelling studies for mining projects across a variety of commodities and regions + Experience in the analysis of large geochemical datasets, including quality control, data interpretation and reporting + A passion for innovation and self-education and the ability to work on complex challenges and find solutions for colleagues and clients + Strong writing skills including technical reports and proposals. English proficiency (verbal and written) is required, second language (French or Spanish) valued + Ability to manage work independently, as well as direct and collaborate with others + Professional registration or working towards such and a commitment to Continuous Professional Development + An understanding of an interdependent health and safety culture in the workplace, in the field and wherever you go Don’t quite meet all the criteria?
