The Associate Medical Physicist position plays an integral role in the investigation and evaluation of equipment and insures new treatment imaging techniques. Provides medical physics coverage as deemed appropriate to the sub specialty.(i.e.. Radiation Therapy, Cardiac Cath.). Oversees acceptance testing of new or renovated medical equipment and imaging network. Cooperates and adheres to regulatory agencies (state and federal) in demonstrating compliance with applicable rules and recommendations. Develops and maintains contacts with physicists in other practices and maintains professional working relationships with the pertinent department Directors and Medical Directors.
Job Responsibilities
Develops and maintains contacts with physicists in other practices. Confers with physicians throughout Inova systems regarding patient dosages, regarding equipment evaluation and quality assurance.
Cooperates and adhere to regulatory agencies (state and federal) in demonstrating compliance with applicable rules and recommendations.
Confers with vendors or equipment used in practice (i.e. linear accelerators, MRI, CT etc.) concerning purchase specifications, acceptance rules and regulations.
Discusses with patients and other members of the public radiation exposure with medical procedures.
Confers with physicians in subspecialties in all patient uses in ionizing radiation.
Provides Medical Physics coverage as deemed appropriate to the sub specialty (i.e.. Radiation Therapy, Cardiac Cath.).
Confers with engineering concerning radiation shield design for all area of the hospital which utilize ionizing radiation.
Oversees acceptance testing of new or renovated medical equipment and imaging network.
Performs calculations and measurements to insure new treatment imaging techniques and to investigate in greater detail established techniques.
Reviews new calibration protocols and verify by experiment and computation the impact they will have on the clinical application.
Investigates and evaluate new equipment and improvements in existing equipment so as to reduce costs and downtime, while increasing efficiency and accuracy for there application.
Intercompares data with other radiation therapy institutions; Stays abreast of clinical and dosimetric literature in sub specialty.
Attends any hospital assigned committees (i.e. Radiation Safety Committee).
Maintains professional working relationship with the pertinent Department Directors and the Medical Directors; Develops and maintains contacts with physicists in other practices.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
With time-in-work experience, is eligible to take the American Board of Radiology certification.
Master's Degree in Physical Science
Applicant is eligible to submit to become VA state inspector in the subject specialty
