Summary of Job Duties:The Research Phlebotomist will provide clinical support for a federally funded study, The DISCOVAR Study, housed in the Department of Epidemiology in the Fay W Boozman College of Public Health at UAMS. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and the Program Manager, the Research Phlebotomist will have primary responsibility for data and biological specimen collection (including blood draws via venipuncture) from study participants in Arkansas. With appropriate personal protection equipment and in accordance with OSHA and CDC guidelines, the Research Phlebotomist will travel around the state to conduct clinic visits and home visits as needed. Applicants must have a valid state driver’s license, insurance and reliable transportation to conduct study visits. Applicants bilingual in Spanish and English are strongly encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:

High School diploma/GED required.

One (1) year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Current Licensed Phlebotomist in Arkansas (i.e., passed the National Council Licensure Examination).

Valid Arkansas driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a variety of personalities under stressful circumstances. 

Must have excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak on the phone clearly and professionally, and the ability to adhere to standardized procedures and policy. 

Must have daily access to reliable transportation and be able to travel throughout the state.  May involve overnight stays occasionally.

Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels including management internally and externally (encompasses verbal, written, interpersonal, and listening)

Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA, and IRB regulations for human research.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

Three (3) or more years in a clinical or public health research project.

One (1) or more years of experience interviewing patients or participants for a research study.

Three (3) or more years of experience with data collection for a clinical or epidemiologic research study, including collection of biological specimens

CPR/BLS Certification.

Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Responsibilities:

Collect venous blood, saliva, and blood spot samples, questionnaires, and study forms from participants via home or clinic visits following standard operating procedures to facilitate compliance with all institutional and governmental policies and regulations.

Transport/store/ship samples and study forms to the UAMS campus following standard operating procedures to facilitate compliance with all institutional and governmental policies and regulations.

Process samples using standard operating procedures to facilitate compliance with all institutional and governmental policies and regulations.

Meet weekly and monthly project goals for data collection.

Store samples and record samples in electronic inventory at the central Lab

Maintain supplies and essentials for study.

Attend staff meetings and trainings. 

Maintain accurate study records.

Obtain and maintain HIPAA training annually.

Acquire and maintain study-required regulatory training e.g. Good Clinical Practice and Human Subject Protection which can be obtained via Citi Training.

Adhere to study confidentiality policies, maintain study participant confidentiality, and exhibit professional conduct.

Perform quality control steps on data entry and data management.

Audit participant files.

Document and report protocol deviations to the Center’s IRB representative to address and ensure regulatory compliance.

Provide research support for other ongoing Center projects

Conduct follow-up phone calls to study participants as needed.

Manage study files using study-related databases.

Perform other duties as assigned.
