Position Number: 005817 Department: College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (Col) Employment Type: Permanent - Full-time Months Per Year: 9 Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Area of Research Specialization: Ethics and Data Science, broadly construed, with research and teaching interests in areas such as (but not limited to) privacy, model transparency, explainability, public trust, algorithmic fairness, data and social justice (including approaches traditionally underrepresented in the field such as feminist, queer/trans, non-Western, etc.), data and migration, environmental issues, or related questions for artificial intelligence. Area of Teaching Competence: Open, but candidates should be able to teach the required ethics class for graduate students in Data Science and to co-teach in the undergraduate “Data and Society” studio course. The successful candidate will have a tenure home in the Department of Philosophy, with a workload split of 51% in Philosophy and 49% in the University’s interdisciplinary School of Data Science. Minimum Experience / Education: UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline. Preferred Education Skills and Experience: In addition to the required Area of Research Specialization above, candidates must: (1) have a doctoral degree in philosophy or a related discipline (such as Science & Technology Studies) at the time of appointment; (2) provide evidence of scholarly activity appropriate for a tenured position in a philosophy department; and (3) provide evidence of successful teaching. Rank will be determined at time of appointment and assistant professors with credentials appropriate for appointment at the associate rank will also be considered.
