Associate Professor or Professor (Open Rank) and Vice Chair

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Vice Chair for Research. The applicant should have an MD and/or PhD and should be at the Associate or Professor level, tenured or on the tenure track, with a robust research program and a history of sustained, significant extramural research support. The applicant should have substantial extramural funding that can initially fund 50% of their salary in areas of research that are complementary to the research portfolio within the department and more broadly at UT Health San Antonio. Current research in the department is both clinical and preclinical and focused on mood disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep disorders, chronic pain, substance use disorders, and suicide. San Antonio is known as Military City USA, and UT Health San Antonio has extensive research collaborations with active duty military partners in San Antonio as well as Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, and with clinical researchers at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital, which is adjacent to UT Health San Antonio. The Department’s vision is to expand these areas of research with additional emphases in biomarkers and neuroimaging. The duties of the Vice Chair for Research are as follows: (1) be the spokesperson and advocate for the research faculty of the Department to the Chair and the Executive Committee of the Department; (2) facilitate collaborations between faculty of the Department and with faculty in other Departments, particularly in areas in which the Department currently has high levels of functioning and expertise; (3) leverage such collaborations into projects that will expand the grant funding, publications and national reputation of the faculty; (4) develop, in conjunction with the senior faculty, a process for mentoring junior research faculty in obtaining grants, publishing, and presenting their own research results; and (5) promote the integration of basic and clinical research faculty into translational projects.

The Vice Chair for Research shall have ongoing Department salary support for a 50% effort for their administrative duties as Vice Chair.  After a period of start up support (to be negotiated), the Vice Chair should support the other 50% of their salary through external funding.  The Vice Chair shall be eligible to participate in the Department annual incentive program.
