The Associate Scientist will be responsible for the coordination and execution of product development and commercialization for Rao’s and Michael Angelo’s product and packaging initiatives including new platform and line extension innovation, cost optimization, ingredient testing and application, and quality improvements.

You will bring a practical application and understanding of food ingredient and technology principles, and the identification and innovative creation of new and unique products that are instrumental in creating food our consumers love, while achieving business goals by ensuring that objectives, product design and timelines are met. 

You will lead benchtop, pilot plant, and plant trials to test and create prototypes throughout the product development and commercialization process.

The Associate Scientist possesses and demonstrates a passion for food innovation, understanding of connection between consumer insights and food product design, retort shelf stable foods, design of experiments, and highly effective communication. You understand the importance of packaging and the interdependence of packaging with product design. You will provide technical leadership in execution of new products, packaging, and processes in an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk taking.

In this role you will report to the Packaging Manager of Rao’s and Michael Angelo’s.

Essential responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Leads the identification, assessment, and validation of formulations from benchtop through commercialization while partnering with the cross functional team (Marketing, Sensory, Operations/Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing, QA, Regulatory, Process Development and Package Development) and externally with vendors, co-manufacturers, and lab services

Ensures all proper documentation is recorded accurately and project milestones are on schedule.

Conducts and leads assessment and capability studies, product startups/commercialization and provides on-site support to Plant Operations and Quality Assurance for new products, productivity, and quality programs. 

Fosters an innovation culture by continually introducing consumer-centric ideas and product concepts for new products, quality improvements, and productivity. 

Manage the Packaging lab and keep in working condition, restock supplies regularly, assist packaging engineers with testing and prototype creation.

Job Complexity:

Conducts and leads prototype creation (packaging and product) and assessments with cross functional project teams on an ongoing basis.

Captures feedback and clearly communicates findings and next steps to internal and external stakeholders.

Interact and communicate effectively with Senior Management as well as Plant Management. 

Problem-solving skills with ability to identify, interpret and analyze the correct data, and provide detailed direction to development projects.

Handles multiple projects concurrently and prioritizes them based on business objectives and timelines with manager’s guidance. 

Sustains a high level of competence and professionalism in a dynamic business environment. 

Demonstrates flexibility and ability to react rapidly to changes in direction.

Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills to work with a team in achieving the targeted results.

We are looking for the following abilities and skills:

Bachelors or higher in Food Science or related field with Product Development emphasis.

Years’ Experience Required: 0-2 years of related experience with a preferred consumer-packaged goods background; experience with shelf stable foods unit operations in beverages or sauce foods is preferred.

Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to details, good communications, and interpersonal skills. 

Passion for food science, product development, packaging, ingredient technology, and consumers as it relates to innovation for new products, line extensions, and productivity opportunities. 

Can determine, with guidance, the root cause of a problem and execute effectively on solutions.

Ability to work with support groups and function effectively in a team environment.

Working Conditions:

Anticipated travel of up to 25% to locations which may include the following: World Headquarters (WHQ) Office, Research Kitchen, Pilot Plant, and Manufacturing Plants (Campbell Soup Company (CSC), co-manufacturers and vendors).

A significant portion of the job is in the thermal production environment; thus, the work exposes the employee to heat and hot food products, coolers, and freezers requiring the use of personal protective equipment.

Ability to walk or stand up to three-quarters of the workday.

Physical ability to handle weights of up to approximately thirty pounds. 

Handle allergens including dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, eggs and other food ingredient chemicals and allergens, while wearing appropriate PPE. 

Willingness and ability to taste and evaluate a wide range of food products and ingredients

Compensation and Benefits:

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between 

$58,700-$84,400

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
