Summary:
The Central Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) is dedicated to establishing and maintaining strategic relationships between Penn and a wide range of local and national corporations and foundations. We focus specifically on identifying and connecting prospective institutional partners with Penn leaders and faculty members who have shared interests and complementary goals. Our expertise covers Penn’s teaching, research, and public service activities as well as knowledge of the University’s broader institutional needs for endowed faculty positions, student scholarship support, and capital needs. CFR works closely with all school, center, and central development units on prospect assignments, solicitation strategies, and proposal development. We work to promote University priorities as defined by the Board of Trustees, the President, the Provost, and the Deans and Directors of Penn’s Schools and Centers. We also coordinate our efforts with the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of Research Services.
Description:
As part of the central Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR), the Associate Director assists in maximizing philanthropic funding from companies and corporate foundations to support priority research programs/activities across the University, especially within the science, engineering, and health Schools. The Associate Director will be an experienced fundraiser with a proven track record in raising philanthropic six-figure and larger gifts and grants from national companies, with a preference in the science and health fields. Some familiarity with sponsored research contracts is also preferred. In addition, the Associate Director will manage and oversee the corporate prospect management function for central CFR and Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and serve as a link to the administrative research offices at Penn, including the Penn Center for Innovation (PCI).
The Associate Director plays a key role in identifying and implementing strategies, activities, communications, and coordinated outreach to enhance corporate/University partnerships and to cultivate and solicit these constituencies for support of University programs. As such, the Associate Director should understand and communicate effectively the scientific, technical, educational, financial and HR aspects of University projects. The Associate Director will plan the involvement of other University officials such as deans, associate deans, and faculty in corporate and foundation solicitation activities as well as the development and submission of proposals.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
+ Lead fundraising and stewardship from among a portfolio of national corporations, with a preference in the areas of science, technology, medicine, and health. Strive for closures of six-figure gifts or larger, in coordination with staff across DAR and the Provost offices.
+ Lead strategic collaboration and plan involvement of other University officials such as deans, associate deans, and faculty in corporate and foundation solicitation activities, in consultation with DAR and the Provost offices.
+ Develop appropriate outreach mechanisms (i.e. marketing and research materials) for corporate partners, as well as develop profiles that summarize, analyze, and make recommendations for strategic engagement with key companies and industries.
+ Lead strategic corporate prospect management function in central CFR and DAR; provide guidance in all company engagement for fundraisers across DAR.
+ Identify and expand the pool of corporate prospects in support of priorities in the Schools. This includes active engagement with corporate partners as well as monitoring various industry and mainstream news sources to keep DAR colleagues abreast of industry funding trends.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 3 to 5 years (Associate Director C job profile) or 5-7 years (Associate Director D job profile) of experience in corporate fundraising and development or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A demonstrated familiarity with science, engineering, medicine and health fundraising is a plus. Demonstrated ability to communicate with multiple constituencies in an academic setting and strong track record of successful professional proposal writing or marketing a plus. Previous university and/or development experience, knowledge of and interest in corporate and foundation fundraising preferred. Excellent written communication abilities and good oral communication skills. Expertise with computers and software packages, e.g. word processing, spreadsheets and database software is essential. Knowledge of development-related software and computer resources is helpful. Ability to work with diverse group of constituents including faculty. Ability to handle complex and highly confidential materials. Strong attention to detail. Well-organized, self-motivated, resourceful and ability to work independently.
