OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

 

The Associate Vice President of Development, Duke University Health System reports to the Vice President of Development & Alumni Affairs for Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA), and is a member of the senior leadership team.

 

The Associate Vice President (AVP) is responsible for developing, managing, and leading all aspects of the fundraising program in support of Duke University Health System (DUHS) and also serves to support the greater fundraising efforts of DHDAA.

 

The individual will be an accomplished, driven, focused and collaborative fundraiser, coach, mentor, strategist and problem solver to advance this critical area of philanthropy. 

 

The AVP will work closely with DHDAA leaders, gift officers, prospect development and research, and advancement resources to secure gifts at all levels from alumni, grateful patients, and community members to benefit all current and future aspects of Duke University Health System. The AVP will lead the formation and execution of an caregiver honor platform, grateful patient fundraising program, and build upon the existing physician and clinical leader training program, in partnership with dedicated team professionals in these respective areas.

 

As a member of the Vice President's senior leadership team, the Associate Vice President will contribute, through operating and strategic planning, to Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs fundraising initiatives, campaigns and other programs. Members of the Vice President's senior leadership team consider and contribute to other programmatic efforts that enhance DHDAA's success, including new programs and resource development.

The AVP will manage a portfolio and oversee a team that includes front line fundraisers and support staff. The AVP will work closely with research analysist to coordinate and maximize grateful patient data.

 

WORK PERFORMED

 

Fundraising and Portfolio Management – 50%

 

Grow and manage a pool of prospects capable of making gifts of $1 million or more supporting DUHS, from identification to stewardship.  Staffs Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DUHS and senior administrative and physician leaders of DUHS to raise funds for Duke Health, with a specific focus on the needs of DUHS. This also includes partnering with leaders in the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing.  Partner with Vice President of DHDAA and AVP of Transformational Giving to secure transformational gift for DUHS as well as other fundraising leaders across campus.  Able to form clear strategies – and execute – to reach annual goals and to endeavor to reach DUHS campaign goal of approximately $500M over five years, collectively as a team and leader of the DUHS vertical.     

 

Strategic Program Management – 25% 

 

Oversee and manage all development activities of DUHS. Design, implement and oversee fundraising strategic plans as well as annual operating plans for DUHS that orient the development programs toward maximizing principal, leadership & major gifts and enhancing traditional and new programs to encourage capital and programmatic gifts. Oversee organizational design and development to achieve program objectives. Design and implement Honor Your Caregiver and Grateful Patient programs that identify, cultivate, and result in solicitation of annual, major, principal and transformational gifts for DUHS. Bolster the existing Physician Philanthropy Training Program that increases physician involvement in DHDAA development programs to increase major, principal, and transformational giving. 

 

Managing – 20%

 

Supervise professional and support staff, including directing personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, promotions and transfers, and vacation schedules, among others. Provide direction and leadership to fundraisers supporting DUHS. Provide direction and leadership to prospect research and analytics staff on HIPAA compliant patient data processes. Provide direction and leadership to annual and digital staff leading strategies for grateful patients and community members.

 

Administrative – 5%

 

Partner with Vice President of DHDAA to ensure Duke Health’s success in the Made for This Campaign. Manage budget for DUHS development team. Ensure HIPAA compliance for all DUHS development programs.

DEPARTMENTAL PERFERENCES/SKILLS

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING

 

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.  MBA or MHA degree required. CFRE or equivalent preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Minimum of 10 years demonstrated successful experience and effectiveness in major and principal gift fundraising, preferably in an academic, academic medical center, or hospital setting. Proven record of securing $1M+ gifts from individuals and organizations. Preference for at least one $10M+ gift secured. Proven record of building a grateful patient fundraising programs and supporting platforms. Experience in funds management, endowment management, and compliance.  Significant experience working with academic leaders, top administrators, volunteers and volunteer groups.   Proven ability to achieve results working through others – facilitating and enabling others to act will be as important as actions taken directly. Experience working in an academic environment and staffing senior academic leaders on donor calls as well as at volunteer meetings and events is required. Experience in working in a freestanding, private, not for profit hospital system in the capacity of fundraising is required.   Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment.

 

Excellent writing skills for proposals/solicitations, faculty briefings, philanthropic cases for support, one-pagers, and high-level correspondence with leaders and donors.  Excellent PowerPoint and presenting skills for large and small audiences.

 

Business acumen in hospital settings in order to understand budgets and sustainability modeling. 

 

Previous experience in a campaign.

Education
