About the Indiana State Board of Accounts (SBOA):
The Indiana State Board of Accounts provides the citizens of the State of Indiana with complete confidence in the integrity and financial accountability of state and local government. We also provide the legislature and other interested parties with accurate and reliable information. For more than 100 years, we have been holding government officials accountable to their constituents for financial reporting by following the Indiana Code when making any types of decisions that relate to taxpayer dollars.
Role Overview :
The Attorney Senior Attorney supports the Special Investigations Unit which investigates allegations of public corruption by elected officials and other public servants. Allegations often concern suspected fraudulent conduct, misappropriation, and losses of public funds. We review accounts, records, files, and reports when determining compliance with state and federal law. We also assist with training and answering questions when publicly funded entities request guidance and support.
You will engage with various government, law enforcement, and accountability agencies and organizations during investigations. You will assist with drafting, reviewing, and submitting publicly issued reports as outlined by state statutes. You will also assist, and serve as a liaison to, state and federal prosecutors and civil litigation attorneys with the Office of the Indiana Attorney General.
The ideal candidate will have:
+ Excellent legal research and writing skills.
+ Experience working with county and local governments, public financing, and applicable laws governing the management and accounting of public funds.
+ Experience conducting and assisting with confidential investigations.
+ Experience in both civil litigation and criminal prosecutions.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $85,020 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are:
+ May train, manage, delegate to, and/or provide support for any legal support staff.
+ Advise and provide legal support to agency staff on programs and legal areas.
+ May oversee, draft, review, or provide legal advice regarding contracts.
+ Research, interpret, and provide legal advice about laws, rules, policies, and legal opinions of agency operations.
+ May draft and review legislation and administrative rules.
+ Utilize legal resources, dockets, legal files, and official records relating to legal procedures.
+ Create, prepare, and distribute documents for hearings, including orders and decisions.
+ Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
+ Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
+ May handle administrative matters and hearings while maintaining appropriate decorum, hearing evidence, ruling on the admissibility of evidence, and/or making reasoned decisions supported by evidence.
+ May be required to utilize litigation skills and experience for agency operations.
+ Organize and manage caseload in preparing for hearings and/or litigation.
+ May review pleadings, motions, and discovery.
+ May draft appeals and briefs or perform legal writing assignments.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours that may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
Credentials:
+ A Doctorate of Jurisprudence with 5+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney.
+ Indiana Bar Admission license in good standing.
Additional requirements:
+ Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply relevant statutes, case law, and rules.
+ Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
+ Ability to successfully utilize a case management system to manage a docket, case information, party information, and serve orders.
+ Strong legal research, writing, and litigation skills.
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
This role provides direct supervision for two or more attorneys.
