A lot about you
Yahoo News UK is looking for an intern to join our audience team, focused on social media production. We need a digitally savvy, detail-oriented journalist with a wide range of interests, from news to lifestyle and entertainment. They should understand the fast-moving dynamics of the biggest platforms and be able to produce video, images and write for social media.
We are looking for a critical thinker who can bring a fresh perspective to our newsroom but who is also keen and willing to learn, and quickly. The right candidate will learn to translate their instincts and understanding of the newest trends into actionable newsroom content. They will be expected to develop a strong editorial judgement and an exceptional ability to prioritise quickly.
The ideal candidate will be trained to work comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-focused environment and they will also be taught a wider set of audience knowledge, including how to optimise content for discovery by applying editorial and SEO best practices and interpret data.
Collegiality and strong communication skills are imperative.
Requirements:
A degree in journalism, media production and/or a NCTJ equivalent or a minimum of 2 years of experience in an entry-level social media production position
Experience running social media accounts for a news publisher or content agency (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) OR
Experience building a vibrant online community (personal or branded, private or public)
Experience producing and editing photos, graphics and video for social media and writing posts and captions
Preferable but not necessary:
Experience with Canva, Adobe Photoshop/Premiere (or equivalent software)
Experience using social management tools to schedule and optimise (SocialFlow, HootSuite, Echobox or similar)
Experience with any other social networks such as LinkedIn, Threads, WhatsApp, Reddit, Snapchat, BeReal, Telegram, Bluesky, Mastodon, Twitch, Discord, Letterboxd, etc
Have an understanding of media law
Ability to investigate and verify claims on social media
Experience reading and using analytics to make decisions. This includes scale and engagement metrics.
Product interest and curiosity for how information travels online, including news alerts and curated user experiments.
Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including early morning and late nights.
