Auditor I, Senior

The Senior Auditor I examines and reports on vessels and other marine facilities relative to compliance with the applicable requirements of the Standards, Codes, Guides, etc., related to services offered under Management Systems Certification programs. May also be responsible for the administration of office procedures and monitoring of business performance at an assigned port.

What You Will Do:

Acts as a professional specialist for the organization in the application of related rules, regulations, requirements, concepts, principles, and processes. Maintains an active awareness of new methods and developments affecting the technical scope of assigned responsibilities and makes recommendations for changes in the auditing processes and safety programs as warranted by such developments.   Recommends new approaches to problems encountered and proposes changes in methods or procedures where necessary. Plans, schedules, and coordinates various phases of auditing work and monitoring the quality of service on work performed. Engages in contact with clients to resolve problems within their area of expertise. Performs routine and complex audits on vessels, other marine facilities, and offshore units for compliance with statutory requirements. Prepares technically accurate and timely reports of all inspections and audits performed. Monitors work and projects performed by subordinate auditors to ensure maintenance of quality, content, consistency, and continuity of all work performed. Provides leadership, guidance, and training to less experienced auditors. Promotes the services and capabilities of ABS to present and potential customers. Maintains audit records in an orderly and up-to-date manner in responsibility.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

Degree or equivalent qualifications from a tertiary institution recognized within a relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum two-year program); or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer, and A minimum of five (5) years of experience working as an Auditor; or a minimum of eight (8) years of industry experience, including a minimum of 3 years as an auditor working for an IACS Classification Society.  The candidate must have at least five years of experience in areas relevant to the technical or operational aspects of shipboard operational management. Such experience may be gained in the following ways: ship classification or statutory surveys; or sea-going service as a certificated watch-keeping officer; or employment in a technical role (for example, technical manager, superintendent, operations manager) in a ship management company; or any combination of these three. Alternately, qualifications and experience may be considered if they can be shown to be at least equivalent to those specified above and are an acceptable basis for a maritime labor inspector.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the vessels/units’ engineering systems, and machinery and a good understanding of operations. A sound foundation of audit training and practical experience with vessels/units in service. Ability to read engineering plans and other technical publications. Knowledge of computer programs or software packages related to job responsibilities. Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, pertinent information relative to assigned area of technical expertise. Ability to analyze problems and propose solutions. Responsiveness to customers and the ability to work well with others. Willingness to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management System. Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of their future work.
