Job Summary

To support production and troubleshoot activities on fully automated assembly lines for manufacturing, we’re looking to add an Automation Engineer located in Austin, TX.

What a typical day looks like:

Assist maintenance team to identify root cause of reoccurring issues and apply corrective actionsAutomation system debug - Hardware, Electrical, PLC, Robot, VisionUpgrades to system to enable processing of new part models, data tracking, performance improvements, machine uptime, etc.Update and add PLC code (Siemens) to support new models and prices changesUpdate machine vision program (Cognex) to support new models and process changesUpdate and create new robot programs (Mitsubishi) as needed to support new models and process changesDevelop a project plan to work diligently towards finding the best solution for complex automation challengesUse 3D CAD software to review and design mechanical components and assembliesDesign, build and troubleshoot functional prototypes of mechatronic systems incorporating compute, sensing, and actuation to explore feasibility of proposed solutions and inform the design of scalable systemsRecommend best path forward to move from lab-scale prototype to scalable and deployable processGenerate required documentation to capture final solution details and transfer knowledge to deployment partners

The experience we’re looking to add to our team

BS or MS degree in Engineering (Mechatronics, Electrical, Automation, Robotics, or equivalent) with 5+ years of hands-on experience in mechatronics developing, prototyping, and applying automation, industrial controls systems, IoT, AI machine vision, and robotics into cohesive and innovative solutionsAbility to program, test, and troubleshoot UL508A industrial automation systems (PLCs, HMI’s, cabinet hardware, VFD’s, starters, I/O, ladder logic) with oversight from customer Engineering teamAbility to drive root cause/corrective action and process optimization activities to closure efficiently with proper design of experiment (DOE) practicesKnowledge of MS Excel and Excel VBA along with familiarity with at least one programming language (i.e; Python, Java, C++, or similar)Ability to present findings with confidence, backed up by data, research, and prototyping resultsKnowledge of optics principles & Machine Vision as they relate to CCD cameras, 2D and 1D lasers, and their use for positioning and identificationWorking knowledge of robotics (6-axis and/or SCARA), pneumatics, servo motors, motion controllers, PLC and and PC-based control systems Basic experience with CAD, Design of Experiments fundamentals, and basic understanding of robotics and automationWorking experience with mechanical fixturing and pneumaticsFamiliarity with process Design for Manufacturing and Mechanical drawingsExperience designing, building & troubleshooting functional prototypes of mechatronic systems incorporating compute, sensing and actuation
